Her Justice is a nonprofit organization that stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers in the areas of family, matrimonial, and immigration law. Her Justice seeks a paralegal to support the Immigration team in our work providing immigration legal services to survivors of intimate partner and gender-based violence.

Responsibilities: The Immigration Paralegal supports the work of the immigration team by assisting with intakes, casework and administrative tasks. Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Under the supervision of an attorney, conducting immigration intake interviews with prospective clients in person and over the phone and screening them for immigration relief.
  • Under the supervision of an attorney, providing direct representation on a small caseload of applications for employment authorizations, visas, adjustment of status, and other immigration benefits.
  • Assisting staff attorneys in compiling applications for U Visas, VAWA Self Petitions and other matters, and assisting with client follow-up.
  • Managing and overseeing legal assistants, interns and volunteers in the request and receipt of I-918B U Visa certifications, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, FBI fingerprints, and other limited scope services.      
  • Managing incoming and outgoing referrals for immigration cases.
  • Preparing cases for and coordinating immigration clinics.
  • Recruiting, training and supervising immigration volunteers and interns.
  • Tracking immigration case data, deadlines and overseeing the timely filing of applications.
  • Providing information and referrals to clients seeking assistance outside of our areas of practice.


Qualifications: We seek a self-motivated and self-directed team-player who possesses outstanding organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and computer skills. Minimum qualifications include:


  • Bachelor’s degree, paralegal certification, two year legal studies degree or equivalent training.
  • Minimum two years experience in immigration legal services.
  • Department of Justice (DOJ) accreditation or willingness to become DOJ accredited.
  • Strong project management, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent client interaction skills with experience and sensitivity working with survivors of trauma.
  • Fluency in Spanish required (skills in other foreign languages highly desired).
  • Ability to work independently on multiple tasks as well as with a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice, immigrant rights, women’s rights and domestic violence.
  • Minimum two-year commitment is desired.
