JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Director supports the Philanthropy (major gifts) team in achieving fundraising goals and helps foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization. In a fast-paced and collaborative environment, the Associate Director supports the major gifts team in the management of engagement, solicitation and stewardship strategies; in building a robust pipeline of prospective major donors; and in developing and implementing the team’s communication and outreach plan. The Associate Director leads and assists with special projects and provides administrative support to the Philanthropy team to ensure its efficiency and success. In addition, the Associate Director will be exposed to professional development opportunities and have the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors who are passionate about development and conservation. This position may supervise interns and reports to the Senior Director of Philanthropy


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Assist in the planning, implementing and monitoring of major gifts strategies and activities to generate financial support and raise the visibility of American Rivers among donors and prospects.

·       Assist in the development and management of a robust pipeline of major donors, coordinating with the Development Operations team to identify prospects and document qualification activities.

·       As part of the qualification process, contact donors and prospects by phone and written correspondence.

·       Liaise regularly with Communications and Conservation colleagues to generate content to convey impact to donors, as well as with Operations and Finance as needed for preparing budgets and financial reports.

·       Develop materials and draft content for donor updates, proposals and reports, as well as assist with copy editing.

·       Conduct research and prepare research briefings on current and prospective donors.

·       Draft strategy memoranda and meeting scripts to prepare gift officers for visits and successful asks, demonstrating understanding of donor interests and philanthropic habits.

·       Work closely with the SVP of Advancement and the Executive Office to support fundraising and stewardship efforts. 

·       Oversee implementation of the Major Gifts team’s donor communications plan, including preparation of mailings.

·       Maintain accurate donor records in the development database (ROI Solutions), monitor major gifts portfolios and ensures high touch plans are executed and documented.

·       Maintain and assume responsibility for organizing and optimizing donors’ and the team’s shared drive files.

·       Monitor team and gift officer progress toward annual financial goals and key performance indicators.

·       Assist in developing fundraising trainings for conservation staff.

·       Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks and special projects as requested.

·       May recruit and supervise interns.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·       At least five years of relevant work experience, preferably in nonprofit fundraising, OR an advanced degree with least three years of relevant experience.

  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

·       Detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to independently manage assignments, as well as take the initiative in making suggestions and assisting others with projects.

·       Ability to synthesize information to produce concise yet thorough prospect research and inform donor strategies.

·       Ability to break down complex subject matter into understandable and compelling language.

·       Proactive and creative problem solver who will take initiative to suggest and execute improvements to existing processes.

·       High degree of professionalism with ability to practice discretion and sound judgement.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

·       Prefer a candidate with some knowledge of and interest in conservation issues.

·       Personal commitment to American Rivers’ mission.
