Horizon House is Pennsylvania’s oldest psychiatric rehabilitation agency. Since 1952, we have been dedicated to helping people with mental illness, drug and alcohol addictions, developmental/intellectual disabilities, and homelessness to stabilize their lives and to help them live as independently as possible in the community. With over 100 locations throughout South and North Eastern Pennsylvania and the state of Delaware, Horizon House provides services to a diverse population focusing on individual strength and choice. 


We are seeking qualified candidates for our vacant Peer Support Specialist position, located in Philadelphia County. Functioning as a member of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) multidisciplinary team to promote self-determination, personal responsibility and empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery. Some responsibilities include: 

  • Assisting program participants in regaining control over their own lives and their recovery process. 
  • Providing peer counseling and support and drawing on common experiences as a peer to validate participant’s experiences.
  • Provide guidance and encouragement to participants to take responsibility and actively participate in their own recovery.
  • Support participants with various activities of daily living
  • Help participants achieve self-identified goals, independence and to live with improved self-sufficiency in the community.
  • Document progress and service activities in the electronic health record.

Qualifications: 

  • A person who is self-identified as having met the criteria for serious mental illness as defined in the Mental Health Bulletin (OMH-94-04) who utilizes or has utilized mental health and/or co-occurring services and has been trained and certified to help her/his peer identify and achieve specific self- determined goals. 
  • High school diploma or GED, Peer Specialist certification and at least two years of paid or volunteer work; or any combination of experience, education or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skill and ability required. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recovery/wellness principles and ability to model and mentor the recovery process and demonstrate effective coping skills. 
  • Ability to establish supportive and trusting relationships with people with mental illnesses, including respect for peoples’ rights and personal preferences. 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Good writing and computer skills for documenting in an electronic health record. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a focused interdisciplinary team. 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. 


Scope: 

  • Frequent talking and listening. 
  • Required to assist with crisis intervention in emergency situations, including aggression by participants. 
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, fold, kneel, stack, stoop and bend which may include direct intervention with clients. 
  • Possess manual dexterity and fine motor skills. 
  • Local travel required, including transporting program participants. 
  • May be required to report to work during emergencies, including inclement weather.
