Reporting to the Associate Director of Informatics and Data Services, the Project Director assumes the major responsibility for the operation and implementation of multiple research projects and uses this leadership role to collaborate and develop new research projects.

Representative Duties:

1. Designs and Implements Research and Health IT Projects

  • Oversees the implementation of the electronic patient reported outcomes (ePRO) system.
  • Trains Medical Staff on ePRO system
  • Assists in implementation and planning of other Health IT systems as related to projects
  • Oversees and participates in the design, piloting and full implementation of research studies and data collection
  • Manages start-up activities of new studies and projects
  • Manages, works cooperatively and nurtures relationships with Medical Department and other Fenway Departments outside of TFI
  • Trains Medical Providers on study protocols as applicable
  • Trains Medical Staff on ePRO system and other Health IT systems
  • Conducts interviews and focus groups with Medical Providers according to study protocol
  • Creates and operationalizes protocols based on study objectives, sound research principles, and regulatory requirements
  • Prepares/revises new and existing study protocols, informed consent forms, recruitment materials, patient information, and SOPs for review by the Institutional Review Board.
  • Revises protocols, questionnaires and consent forms as needed throughout the course of research studies.
  • Prepares annual reports and study closure materials for review by the Institutional Review Board
  • Draft, investigate and track Safety Reports for reporting to the Institution Review Board
  • Meets regularly with Senior Research Study team to review adherence to the project design, conduct of the project, staffing issues, and the fidelity and quality assurance of the interventions
  • Assists in the preparation, and submission of research proposals to government and private funding sources
  • Troubleshoots research issues and problems raised by, and interfaces with sponsors, funders, collaborators and staff
  • Initiate efforts to encourage participation by individuals of diverse communities
  • Reviews project-specific systems and designs and implements new systems to enhance project efficiency.
  • Manages recruitment activities for studies recruiting from the Health Center patient population
  • Manages multiple grants and contracts, requiring extensive coordination of activities and communication
  • Manages multi-site research projects
  • Oversees and participates in the design, piloting and full implementation of research studies and data collection
  • Coordinates and assists in grants writing to public and private funding sources.
  • Utilizes Fenway colleagues for assistance with proposal development, grant writing, and study conceptualization

2. Serves as liaison to a variety of internal and external constituencies

  • Identifies and cultivates relationships with project officers and/or established investigators in a variety of institutions.
  • Works with other Fenway investigators and directors at FCH to identify research questions or service gaps that emerge during service delivery, developing such questions into research proposals and/or programs.
  • Serves as liaison to various working groups throughout the health center as needed.
  • Supports collaborations between Fenway departments.
  • Represents Fenway on national conference calls, meetings and trainings when appropriate.

3. Manages Data Collection, Analysis, and Dissemination

  • Maintains established guidelines of confidentiality and ethical accountability in all discourse with all study participants
  • Actively designs and participates in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Reviews project-specific systems and designs, and implements new systems to ensure and enhance project efficiency
  • Directs systems to control, assure and maintain the quality of all written and computerized statistical data
  • Supervise new subject recruitment and documentation, specimen collection and data collection
  • Oversees the arrangement, and coordination of intake appointments with new clients; assesses and documents eligibility and participation status of candidates; oversees the arrangement of follow-up appointments
  • Manages participant retention efforts
  • Works to implement data management and collection systems, and oversee maintenance of data collection software
  • Oversees data entry and quality checking process; problem-shoots inconsistencies with data and data collection; design systems and structures for file management
  • Utilizes electronic databases to locate and obtain research articles relevant to grant proposals and manuscripts
  • Prepares abstracts and manuscripts, and related data reports, for publication
  • Generates regular descriptive statistics, future projections regarding follow-up, retention and compliance and other data analysis as requested

4. Provides Direct Counseling and Education to Study Participants as Specified by Study Protocol

  • Arranges, coordinates and oversees intake appointments with new clients; assesses and documents eligibility and participation status of candidates; arranges follow-up appointments
  • Oversees and conducts counseling and education and risk reduction education per protocol.
  • Oversees and conducts behavioral interviews with study participants in a clear, open minded, non-judgmental context; maintains established guidelines of confidentiality and ethical accountability in all discourse with all study participants

5. Supervisory Duties

  • Initiates hiring and training of Research Associates and other personnel associated with projects
  • Meets regularly with supervisees for weekly supervision, and conducts annual evaluations of performance
  • Initiates recruitment and training of project Interns, and supervises daily duties

6. Maintains, in collaboration with research clinical staff, the functioning of the lab, following state guidelines and study protocols

  • Oversees the processing, cataloguing, storage and delivery of laboratory specimens in accurate detail
  • Manages phlebotomy and the proper collection of other laboratory specimens according to the infection control guidelines; ensures the timely receipt, calculation and assessment of all lab reports
  • Maintains ample phlebotomy and medical supplies in lab and exam room

7. Utilizes written and verbal communication to contribute to the effective functioning of the research department

  • Maintains current knowledge of HIV research by reading medical journals, articles and other HIV-related publications, attending conferences, seminars, forums, trainings and other available presentations
  • Attends all regularly scheduled research meetings, trainings, forums and pertinent FCH staff meetings
  • Remains knowledgeable about changing state and federal research guidelines to insure full FCHC compliance
  • Presents and disseminates project data at conferences, meetings, and trainings


  • Bachelor’s degree in field related to social science research, MPH or related public health field required
  • Supervisory/management experience; Two years research experience required
  • Experience managing multiple projects and interfacing with outside organizations required
  • Knowledge and experience with health IT
  • HIV-related experience preferred; excellent writing and organizational skills required
  • Strong project management skills required
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented, well organized and have an analytical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to apply innovative approaches to solving issues
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse staff preferred
  • Experience in a health care environment required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Access, Excel and Word required
  • Experience with statistical software, such as SAS or SPSS, a plus
