Founded in 2009, Plastic Pollution Coalition (PPC) is a global alliance of individuals, organizations, businesses, and policymakers working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals, waterways, oceans, and the environment. PPC has grown in the past eleven years to become a broad coalition of more than 1,200 Coalition business and organization members, and over 13,000 individual members, working across the globe in 75 countries on 6 continents.

The Director of Development will work closely with the CEO and Managing Director to broaden the depth of our corporate and foundation relationships, while also developing new fundraising strategies around events and digital fundraising to raise approximately $2M in 2021. The Director of Development is a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Plastic Pollution Coalition. They will manage the overall fund development activities of Plastic Pollution Coalition, coordinating and supporting senior staff in the solicitation of major gifts and foundation support, in addition to managing digital and online support. The successful candidate also will help strengthen existing donor relationships and forge new ones to build Plastic Pollution Coalition’s visibility, impact, and financial resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Major & Individual Donor Cultivation & Retention (35%)
- Oversee all individual donor relationships for the organization. Manage a portfolio of major, mid and low donors and donor prospects (in particular those giving $1,000 - $100,000 or more annually).
- Establish a leadership giving strategy that secures increasing revenue from principal gifts and major donors, friends, and foundations and corporate philanthropy. Work closely with the PPC Leadership Team and the Executive Advisory Board to recruit new board members who are capable of making leadership gifts and address nominating priorities.
- Work with Board Members, CEO and Managing Director to develop stewardship and solicitation plans for all major institutional donors and develop pipeline strategies for new institutional prospects. Ensure all plans are implemented in a timely manner and include other relevant staff to maximize outcome.
- Identify $1K+ individuals among current, and new, donors with whom to build deeper relationships.
- Develop, manage and grow the Plastic Pollution Coalition Membership program within targets and milestones that support the organization’s goals.
Institutional Philanthropy (25%)
- Oversee all philanthropic institutional relationships for the organization, including corporate partnerships, event sponsors, private foundations, and government funders. Manage a portfolio of major institutional donors and prospects (giving $5,000 - $100,000 or more annually).
- Oversee Foundation portfolio and ensure proposals and reports meet deadlines and stewardship plans are in place for all relationships Ensure foundation proposal/report templates are kept up to date and reflect most recent organizational communications about mission, programs, impact, etc.
- Find new prospects and develop deeper relationships within the foundation space to ensure continuous growth of the overall program.
- Develop a corporate sponsorship program, in collaboration with the Director of Marketing & Digital Strategy and Managing Director, that results in audience expansion, donation, and gifts-in-kind.
- Create and manage all fundraising materials needed to raise contributed revenue including membership appeals and communications, grant proposals, decks and pitches, budgets and reports, and supplemental materials.
Fundraising Events (25%)
- Manage Development Events schedule, ensuring planning is executed in a timely manner, events schedule is manageable, and events are meeting and exceeding their financial and donor stewardship/prospecting goals.
- Oversee the implementation of our virtual and in-person fundraising events.
- Develop event budgets with an intentional focus on securing in-kind donations and maintaining a strong fundraising/expense ratio – ensure fundraising events meet Net Revenue goals.
- Ensure that all appropriate event follow-ups and acknowledgements are completed, results are accurately recorded, and feedback regarding successes and needed improvements is sought out and used.
- Help identify new fundraising event ideas and assess viability.
Digital Fundraising (15%)
- Develop and implement a multi-channel digital fundraising plan, in consultation with relevant Communications and Technology staff, designed to grow and diversify online donor-base and engage and retain existing donors.
- Identify effective segmentation and establish processes to improve data integrity and to track and analyze fundraising results in coordination with relevant staff.
- Synthesize and analyze giving data to inform stewardship and growth strategies.
- Collaborate with Communications, Marketing and Technology staff on integrated fundraising campaigns; ensure strategies, messaging and goals are aligned.
- Track information related to fundraising strategies and activities, as well as other appropriate information related to individual donors/prospects in the CiviCRM database.
- Lead research efforts related to digital fundraising trends and apply findings to plans and strategies.

BACKGROUND, QUALIFICATIONS & SUCCESS FACTORS
- 7-10-plus years of professional experience in non-profit and/or environmental fundraising preferred; five years fundraising experience required. Experience may include senior positions other than Development so long as the position included significant fundraising responsibilities.
- Demonstrated success in managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources.
- Tangible experience of having increased responsibility and demonstrated fundraising success in expanding donor base and cultivating existing donor relationships over time.
- Strong understanding of fundraising trends, and donor cultivation & stewardship strategies.
- Experience running successful fundraising online events and digital fundraising campaign
- Ability to construct, articulate and implement an annual strategic development plan.
- Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
- Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Plastic Pollution Coalition.
- Proven ability to generate new opportunities, manage change, and lead entrepreneurial growth.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining meticulous attention to accuracy and detail.
- Experience with crm software for tracking relationships with prospects and donors.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s desirable.
