Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership

CASL, generously funded by the National Science Foundation, has as its mission to become the nation’s premier intellectual and scholarship-generating resource on the kind of leadership that has contributed to the legacy of our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities in broadening the participation of African Americans in STEM. Senior Research Scientist

Location: Anywhere

CASL seeks an experienced and knowledgeable Senior Research Scientist with a track record of scholarship in the field of leadership studies, higher education, and/or broadening participation in STEM. The Senior Research Scientist will coordinate a geographically distributed research team including faculty, staff, and graduate students. The Senior Research Scientist will work with other CASL senior staff to ensure full integration of research findings into CASL’s mission, vision, goals, and strategies.


While the position is administratively housed at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas, USVI, the incumbent will support activities led by the Principal Investigators at other partner institutions/ organizations, which include the North Carolina A&T State University, Fielding Graduate University and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.


Education and Experience

·        PhD in Social Science, Leadership, Higher Education, or closely related social science field

·        Track record of scholarship and publications in the field of Leadership, Broadening Participation in STEM, or Higher Education

·        Proven grantsmanship success

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        Demonstrated expertise in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods social science research, including knowledge of case study research and software support for data analysis

·        Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

·        Demonstrated ability to work in teams and independently

·        Demonstrated successful track record of managing IRB requirements

·        Ability to lead and manage a geographically distributed research team

 

Duties and Responsibilities

·        Provide leadership in setting and executing research priorities for CASL, while also establishing the scholarly foundation upon which CASL provides leadership for the nation’s broadening participation agenda

·        Provide leadership for research publications and relevant scholarly works

·        Supervise and mentor graduate research assistants; work productively with affiliated research faculty, external consultants, vendors

·        Appropriately maintain and secure an extensive research database

·        Travel to various institutions, conferences, meetings on behalf of the work of CASL 

·        Other duties as assigned

Scientific Communications Postdoctoral Fellow

Location: Washington, DC

The Science Communications Postdoctoral Fellow will receive professional and career mentorship, as well as opportunities for further developing expertise in conceptualizing, drafting, editing, and managing communications related to the work of CASL. The Fellow will work interdependently with the Office of Communications at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) – located in Washington, DC – in preparing various documents including, but not limited to white papers, brochures, presentation slide decks, viewbooks, media releases, and social media communications. As opportunities arise, the Fellow will contribute to scholarly scientific publications including, but not limited to manuscripts, technical abstracts, white papers, national reports, and posters. The Fellow will interact closely with other functional groups of CASL and ensure full integration of CASL’s investigative findings into mainstream media outlets, online platforms, and national STEM reform discourse.

 

While the position is housed at AAC&U, the incumbent will support activities led by the Principal Investigators at other partner institutions, which include the University of the Virgin Islands, North Carolina A&T State University, and Fielding Graduate University.

 

Education and Experience

  • Earned doctoral degree in leadership studies, social science, higher education, or related discipline


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        Demonstrated knowledge of scholarship related to the challenges of achieving broadening participation in STEM higher education

·        Superior communication skills, written and oral, and an ability to articulate a compelling message to multidisciplinary audiences

  • Experience in scientific writing that relates to broadening participation in STEM is strongly preferred

·        Demonstrated evidence of commitment to inclusive excellence in STEM

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including budget management skills
  • Excellent time- and project-management skills, attention to detail, and ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team environment and on short timelines
  • Highly proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), project management software, and data sharing platforms

·        Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence

 

Duties and Responsibilities

·        Proactively contribute to conceptualizing, developing, writing, editing, and finalizing scientific publications, briefing materials, educational/training materials, and other external-facing documents

  • Participate in raising national awareness about issues relevant to the work of CASL (e.g., leadership studies, broadening participation, undergraduate STEM reform)

·        Provide technical support to CASL through: consultation on data visualization designs, strategic planning for branding and promoting CASL activities, generation of charts and graphs for presentation and dissemination, and organization of CASL-wide promotional items and materials

  • Generate content for virtual and print communications and correspondences related to broad dissemination of CASL findings
  • Facilitate document review timelines, meetings, and discussions as appropriate
  • Perform quality control of and copy editing for refereed and non-refereed documents

·        Maintain a digital habitat for CASL leaders, scholars, fellows, and other stakeholders

  • Participate in CASL team meetings, as appropriate

·        Provide high level logistical and implementation support for CASL

·        Participate as a member of the larger staff of the Office of Undergraduate STEM Education at AAC&U

·        Act as a liaison and maintain communication and correspondence with multiple stakeholder communities, including AAC&U staff

  • Other related duties as assigned

 

Appointment and Salary

This position has a two-year term, with the possibility of renewal of a second two-year term. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.

Program Manager

Location: Washington, DC

The Program Manager for CASL will support the Executive Director in day-to-day oversight, grants compliance and leadership for multi-year grants; plan, develop, organize, implement, manage, oversee, monitor, review and evaluate all aspects and phases of the project as outlined in the terms of the grants; administer grant budgets; ensure the timely and accurate preparation and submission of required reports and statistics; develop and maintain working relationships with those involved with the project; and ensure compliance with institutional policies and applicable state and federal regulations.


While the position is housed at Fielding Graduate University in Washington, DC, the incumbent will support activities led by the Principal Investigators at other partner institutions/organizations, which include the University of the Virgin Islands, North Carolina A&T State University, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

 

Education and Experience:

·        Master’s Degree required; professional project management certifications preferred

·        At least 2-4 years of previous grants management experience required; 5+ years of project management experience preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·        Strong project management skills and knowledge of project management software required

·        Strong written and oral communication skills required

·        Strong budgetary management experience required

·        Strong organizational skills, problem-solving, time management and priority setting skills required

·        Strong leadership and analytical skills with attention to detail required


Major Duties

·        Provide day-to-day administrative management of all assigned project activities

·        Develop calendars and project plans to track all grant activities and allow all stakeholders to track grant activities

·        Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, filing and storage system for all project activities, materials, documents, reports, contact information, etc.

·        Manage internal and external project meetings, including staff videoconferencing scheduling and set-up; logistical event planning for small-to-medium sized project meetings and conferences; and assistance with project staff travel to external meetings and conferences.

·        Delegate project tasks as appropriate based on staff members’ individual strengths, skill sets and experience levels, under the guidance of senior leadership and PIs

·        Monitor and track grant budgets and expenditures and assist leadership and staff in adjusting to necessary budgetary modifications

·        Prepare, submit, and monitor all expenditure documents to ensure appropriate and timely orders, payments, delivery of materials, etc., according to each of the institutions/organizations’ policies and procedures, in collaboration with institutional/organizational financial staff

·        Monitor project technical and financial activities and maintain strict compliance with all federal, institutional, and other regulatory and policy requirements, including federal cost accounting principles

·        Develop project reports and assist with required federal reporting

·        Other duties as assigned
