The Director of Development is responsible for managing the organization’s fundraising initiatives. This position is based in Washington, DC, and will require frequent travel. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising

-         Develop, implement, and manage fundraising objectives and activities to support APIA Scholars annual fundraising goals.

-         Increase the individual, corporate, foundation and government new prospect pipelines by working in close collaboration with Senior Vice President and Executive Director.

-         Support Senior Director of Development to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward cycles for current and prospective donors to ensure timely solicitation, renewals, acknowledgement, and delivery of return on investment.

-         Write and manage the submission of private and corporate foundation grant proposals.

-         Together with the Managing Director of Programs for the APIA Scholars and GMS Scholarships, work closely and regularly to align current student needs, organizational priorities, and grant obligations to department work plans.


Stewardship and Demonstration of ROI

-         Create and disseminate internal reporting for the department that includes but is not limited to presentations, weekly status updates to the Senior Director of Development and Executive Director.

-         Manage the submission of private and corporate foundation reports and ensure that metrics for success are not only met but are proactively being captured.


Liaison to Communications and Marketing Department

-         Working closely with the Director of Communications and Marketing, oversee the conceptualization, planning, implementation and follow-up of fundraising-related events that include but are not limited to APIA Scholars’ Annual Scholarship Benefit, Higher Education Summit, and community receptions.

-         Manage the development of fundraising-related collateral and electronic communications to raise awareness about program areas in need of support.


Management

-         Train and supervise Development Manager(s) and Associate(s). Motivate and encourage growth, competence, and professional development. Assist the Senior Director of Development with organizational strategic initiatives.

-         

Administrative

-         Oversee the tracking of pledges and donations received against annual financial goals.

Work closely with Senior Director of Operations on account management to reconcile funding, track accounts, and submit reports.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

-         Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.

-         Candidate must have 10 + years of proven development and/or sales and marketing experience closing multiple five and six figure gifts and developing relationships with senior management, executive level contacts, and high net worth donors.

-         Candidate must have demonstrated experience working with Corporate giving and/or Foundations to secure multi-year six or seven figure gifts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-         Candidate must have a strong understanding of Social Return on Investment and an ability to articulate the organization’s relevance and value to all current and prospective donors.

-         Candidate must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and be knowledgeable about diverse communities and issues in higher education.

-         Thrives in a fast-paced work environment, balancing multiple demands and responsibilities

-         Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

-         Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills

-         Ability to work seamlessly across the organization and communicate effectively.

-         Ability to work independently and in team settings

-         Experience with the Microsoft Office suite required; familiarity with Salesforce and/or other database programs strongly preferred.
