Position Description

The Driver facilitates the flow of produce from farms to recipient agencies throughout the region. They are responsible for effectively operating vehicles and equipment while practicing safety standards. Drivers are held to a high level of accountability and punctuality in order to fulfill delivery routes and on-farm pick-ups. They should be good humored, think on their feet, and contribute to highly reactive, dynamic work environment. The Driver should be comfortable primarily working independently and collaborating with other staff.

Compensation & Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $18-$22/ hour based on experience. The Driver is a seasonal, full-time and non-exempt position. The driver position requires an average of 30-35 hours/ week from June-December. Due to the seasonal nature of our work, there may be some variation in hours. Overtime rate of (1.5x hourly rate) is paid for time worked over 40 hours/ week.

Specific Responsibilities

Vehicle & Equipment Operation

  • Comply with BAG-driver training, policies, and standards by driving lawfully and carefully at all times. Observe legal load capacity of the vehicle, adjust vehicle speed, and modify routes as needed.
  • Operate manual pump jacks, electric power jacks, and forklifts as needed to rotate inventory and unload/load trucks.
  • Practice safe measures learned during BAG equipment trainings. Stay alert to surroundings and communicate to people around you whenever operating equipment. To contribute to BAG’s culture of safety, always acknowledge and mitigate risk whenever possible.
  • Communicate vehicles and equipment issues to Operations Management promptly. Monitor all equipment for maintenance issues.
  • Maintain vehicle supply levels including emergency and sanitation supplies
  • Complete end of day checklists to comply with BAG’s food safety plan.

Distribution & Pick-ups

  • Build orders and load trucks to fulfill distribution orders, based on direction from the Agency Coordinator.
  • Develop on-the-ground relationships with staff at partner agencies and farms. Communicate all challenges and concerns, as well as feedback received from partner agency or farm staff.
  • Communicate effectively and provide excellent customer service to all BAG partners.
  • Follow delivery and pick up protocols for each partner agency and farm.
  • Ensure safe and proper product handling in accordance with BAG’s food safety plan. Quality standards should be verified for all incoming products.
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping including obtaining all necessary signatures and adjusting order inaccuracies.
  • Practice injury prevention by using safe lifting techniques and communicating to the team anytime assistance is needed. Likewise, support the team when someone may be facing an injury or need assistance.

Operational Support

  • Assist with inventory management as needed.
  • Unload farm pick-ups into coolers or appropriate storage, based on direction from the Agency Coordinator.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to inventory management outlined in BAG’s food safety plan.
  • Ensure that paper verification of food safety from acquisition through warehousing is completed and filed appropriately.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • BAG is a small non-profit where a “pitch-in” spirit is expected. Assistance on additional projects or tasks may be required in addition to normal responsibilities.


Skills

  • Basic iPhone competency (Google Maps)
  • First Aid knowledge (training is provided)


Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Driving history approved by BAG’s auto-insurer
  • Experience driving heavily loaded box trucks in urban and rural environments (training is provided)
  • Experience operating manual and electric pump jacks (training is provided)
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge
  • Able to repeatedly lift 60+ pounds in various conditions
  • Extensive knowledge of local fruit and vegetable varieties
  • Food Handling Experience
  • Customer Service Experience
  • Forklift Operation Experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with navigating Boston highways is a plus
