Description

Media Matters for America — a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a researcher for its Rapid Response Team in the Research & Engagement Department. The ideal candidate will have experience researching and identifying trends in the media, a strong analytical background, and the ability to develop and generate content quickly in response to media coverage.


ROLE SUMMARY:


The role of the Rapid Response Researcher position is to 1) monitor and analyze print, online, and broadcast media for misinformation and identify media trends and narratives, 2) post relevant clips for public consumption, and 3) produce high-impact, compelling, and timely written content that corrects misinformation and responds to media trends or narratives.


REPORTING STRUCTURE:


  • The Rapid Response Researcher reports to the Deputy Director of Research & Engagement, Rapid Response.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Rapid Response: Rapid Response Researchers are responsible for quickly identifying and responding to misinformation or problematic media trends and narratives in the form of clips and timely written content relevant to the current news cycle.


  • Monitoring: Researchers are responsible for monitoring print, online, and broadcast media to maintain familiarity with the media landscape, identify false narratives that advance a conservative agenda, and track media trends and narratives. Monitoring duties may include watching cable and broadcast news, listening to prominent right-wing radio shows on radio or digital platforms, reading blogs and traditional print publications, and identifying emerging or trending falsehoods on social media. Researchers are responsible for summarizing and documenting the media they monitor in Media Matters’ internal archive and for flagging emerging and persistent strands of misinformation – including but not limited to problematic rhetoric and imagery.


  • Research: Researchers are responsible for gathering research on media trends, narratives, and misinformation for internal and external use. 


  • Narrative Building: Researchers are also responsible for tracking larger media narratives and the key strands of misinformation Media Matters is engaged in and to help come up with ways to advance those narratives.


  • Editing: Researchers are often responsible for editing content posted to the Media Matters website for content and clarity using AP and MMFA style guides.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience


  • 1-2 years of political or media experience preferred. Additional experience would be a plus


  • Interest in media and understanding of the effects conservative misinformation has on our public debate


  • Breadth of knowledge about and awareness of current political and policy issues


  • Familiarity with the intersection of social media and news


  • Ability to quickly synthesize information about new topics


  • Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail


  • Ability to work both as a team and independently


  • Ability to adjust in fast-paced and high-pressure situations


  • Can recognize emerging trends and generate creative content ideas
