Overview

Come work for a non-profit organization committed to empowering consumers and communities to speed a just transition to a zero-carbon world!

Green Energy Consumers Alliance is searching for someone who is excited about our mission and would like to work in member & customer services and general administrative tasks. We have eight programs that enable people to make greener energy choices in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Program Associate is an entry level position, but some experience in customer service and/or data entry is a plus.

Customer Service

The Associate will assist with day-to-day customer service operations such as answering phone calls and doing data entry, with a special focus on our two membership-based programs.

The Heating Oil Service: Our non-profit heating oil buying group program has been saving Mass & RI residents energy and money since 1982. We have over 7,000 members who are getting a fair price on oil plus assistance to save more money by saving energy or switching to cleaner forms of heating, like heat pumps. Each year, our membership team assists thousands of members to renew and navigate the benefits of their memberships.

Green Powered: Our Green Powered program allows people to “make the switch” to green electricity. We buy renewable energy from local New England sources on their behalf. We also supply the residents of 35 MA & RI municipalities with more renewable energy than required by state law through “Green Municipal Aggregation” programs. Our members fund new sources of renewable power and reduce our need to burn fossil fuels for electricity. Our customer service team supports these members when they enroll, cancel, change, and inquire about their accounts.

Events

Our organization both organizes its own events to showcase the benefits of clean energy, and attends the events of partner organizations across MA & RI. The Associate would represent our organization at events through informational tabling, helping with set-up and breakdown, checking in attendees, working at stations, and other tasks as assigned. Events are often held at night and on weekends, and the Associate would be able to adjust their schedule to attend events once or twice per month (less in winter, more in spring).

Administrative

The busiest time for our customer service team is in the fall. When customer service is not demanding, the Associate will also help our Administrative staff. Tasks may include helping to document organizational procedures, tracking financial contributions, running administrative reports, and assisting our Administrative Coordinator as needed.

Overall Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Handling incoming & outgoing calls, and emails with participants and the public.
  • Triaging, referring, and/or resolving member concerns in a thorough and organized way.
  • Processing standard communications with new and existing members, including helping to package and send bulk mailings.
  • Explaining our programs to prospective participants.
  • Representing the organization at marketing events 1-2 times per month, including help with set-up, breakdown, and other event activities.
  • Entering data and performing administrative tasks accurately and with proper documentation.
  • Running reports as assigned.
  • Tracking financial contributions during fundraising campaigns.
  • Assisting with administrative procedure documentation and occasional research.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of an associate’s degree, OR 2 years of relevant experience, such as sales, customer service, data entry, or membership services;
  • Good written and/or oral communication skills for interacting with members & the public seeking solutions via our programs;
  • Ability to attend events in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including occasional evenings and weekends, as needed (mileage or travel costs reimbursed);

  • Reliable access to transportation (mileage reimbursed if this is your own vehicle) and driver’s license for monthly travel to events and weekly travel to office;
  • Present residence in Massachusetts or Rhode Island (or willing to relocate);
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster shot.
  •

Preferred:

  • Fluent in a language that’s spoken in underrepresented immigrant communities across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, particularly Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
  • Customer service experience
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Work for this position will be hybrid. The Associate will be expected to come to one of our two offices (Boston or Providence) at least one day per week, but possibly more during our busy season (September – December). Otherwise, the Associate will be provided with a laptop and access to software that will allow work, including customer service, to be done remotely.
