Director of Restorative Practices

The Workshop is currently looking for a passionate and experienced Director of Restorative Practices. The Director of Restorative Practices is responsible for implementing, supporting, documenting and improving the use of restorative practices and systems throughout the school.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with staff and students to clarify and communicate school-wide norms, expectations, shared values and commitments.
  • Work with staff to refine the school’s advisory model to better support school-wide norms and expectations.
  • Manage every stage of the restorative process, including check-in/counseling with students when an incident occurs, identification of follow up steps to repair harm, facilitation of follow up meetings/mediation as needed, and documentation of all instances in which intervention and mediation is required.
  •  Confer with students, parents, and teachers regarding behavior and attendance policies.
  • Actively coach staff regarding student management issues.
  •  Align the school’s restorative systems with its MTSS model, working with the School Counselor and Social Worker as needed.
  • Develop and implement a robust set of Tier 2 supports within MTSS for students in need.
  • Research, adopt and incorporate best practices from other schools or models, and collaborate with leaders in other schools/organizations/districts where appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Possess strong people and project management skills with the proven ability to train, supervise and coach professional staff in order to foster a cooperative team environment
  • Be a smart, strategic thinker who can execute on multiple priorities simultaneously

Knowledge of:

  •  Positive behavioral interventions and support
  • Restorative practices
  • Trauma-Informed Care
  • Creating and implementing student behavior expectations
  • Conflict resolution strategies
  • State/District policy and laws affecting the management of student behaviors

Ability to:

  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and community
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with key stakeholders through a variety of methods
  • Provide leadership of behavior management and supervision
  • Facilitate the resolution of conflicts
  • Plan, organize and manage time and resources

Education and Experience

  •  4+ years of demonstrated experience, preferably within an urban secondary school setting
  •  2+ years of demonstrated success coaching, supervising or leading a team
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Prior experience working within an entrepreneurial or start-up environment also a plus


About the Workshop School

The mission of the Workshop School is to work with students to develop deep connections with peers and adults, the skills they need to succeed in college or the workplace, and a strong sense of agency. The school is organized around real-world learning experiences like interdisciplinary projects, internships, and dual enrollment programs. Through these experiences, students develop the skills that are most critical to success beyond high school, such as collaboration, problem solving, project management, goal-setting, networking, and seeking and using feedback.


At the Workshop, we believe that a strong, supportive community is integral to all academic success and student wellbeing. Project work, which makes up half the school day, is done is advisories of 20-24 students. Each morning begins with circle, and the work we do together is rooted in shared norms and values. Restorative practices are a central part of building and sustaining a healthy and supportive school culture. Located in Philadelphia, the Workshop is part of the School District’s Innovation Network. While this is a school-based, student-facing position, the Director of Restorative Practices will be hired by the Workshop School’s non-profit partner, Project Based Learning, Inc. and will report to the School’s Principal.
