Are you a journalist or editor that wants to publish sharply argued, paradigm-shifting work and disrupt stuck environmental debates? Are you passionate about environmental issues and environmental philosophy? Do you know the environmental canon and believe in the value of ecomodernist thinking?

Breakthrough Journal has published some of the most influential long-form writing on the environment over the last decade. It is an in-house publication of the Breakthrough Institute and has helped to launch the new conservation debate and the ecomodernist movement among many notable contributions. 

The Breakthrough Institute is seeking an executive editor of the Breakthrough Journal to help grow our readership, expand our publication schedule and contributors, and reimagine the publication as it enters its second decade. Strong applicants have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in journalism or publishing. This is a senior position at the Breakthrough Institute, reporting to the Executive Director.

The Breakthrough Institute is an environmental research center based in Berkeley, California. Our research focuses on identifying and promoting technological solutions to environmental and human development challenges in three areas: energy, conservation, and food and farming.

The Breakthrough Institute seeks candidates who bring varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds, and who are eager to learn about many ways of viewing the world. Our goal is to create a community that is rich with cultural, social, and intellectual diversity.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Soliciting and editing pieces for each issue 
  • Craft a theme and introduction that weaves together the pieces of each issue into a coherent intellectual whole
  • Working with contractors, oversee every aspect of the production process, including cover design, poetry, cartoons, advertisements, copyediting, proofreading, layout, and printing
  • Explore opportunities for grant funding, hiring dedicated staff, and publishing more issues per year 

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism or publishing 
  • Deep knowledge of foundational thinking in traditional environmentalism
  • Strong grasp of contemporary environmental debates concerning climate change, energy technologies, agriculture, and human development
  • Familiarity with ecomodernism and its contribution to environmental thinking 
  • Professional-level writing and editing
  • Undergraduate or graduate education in energy, environmental studies, STEM, and/or communications, marketing, or journalism

Salary: $100,000
