Panajachel Colegio Internacional (PCI) is seeking dedicated educators who are passionate about student learning, cultural diversity, community involvement and adventure. We are a small (70 students) non-profit school located in the Guatemalan highlands next to beautiful Lake Atitlan. The town has a population of 12,000 and the lake is surrounded by indigenous villages, each with its own character. Safety is not a concern in our area. PCI offers a unique opportunity to be part of a school that is growing and committed to academic rigor, nurturing the entire child and empowering the indigenous population. Class sizes are far below most schools, and teachers are encouraged to employ a variety of instructional and assessment strategies. PCI alumni attend universities in Guatemala, the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and other countries. All core classes are taught in English, so core teachers need to be proficient in written and spoken English. English mastery is an important aspect of learning in each core subject area.
PCI provides a welcome escape from the myriad of demands and stresses currently being experienced by many teachers in the U.S. and abroad. The school is located on Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Our Principal/Administrator notes that in the several large international schools where he has worked, discipline consumed most of his time. In contrast, he has yet to see any significant discipline issues here at PCI.
Our primary focus is empowering the indigenous population through a high-quality university-preparatory education. Fifty percent of our students pay reduced tuition. This has an impact on our operational budget, and thus salaries and benefits. However, you may rest assured that you will be able to cover your living expenses in Panajachel with the salary we provide. A number of teachers are able to save money as well. Job Tasks and Responsibilities
Teachers are expected to:
● plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that maximize active learning opportunities
● nurture a culture in which teachers view themselves as facilitators of learning and as reflective practitioners
● guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their academic potential
● demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds
● manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures
● maintain good order and discipline among students under their care and safeguard their health and safety at all times
● register and monitor the attendance of students under their care
● work collaboratively with their co-teachers when applicable
● prepare classroom for class activities and in all cases maintain the safety and orderliness of the classroom
● establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
● contribute lesson plans for the permanent PCI curriculum bank when possible
● use available materials and relevant technology to support instruction
● assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments in a timely manner
● provide students with appropriate feedback on work
● encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies
● maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development and communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, Administrative Director, and parents regarding student progress and student needs
● prepare required reports on students and activities, and update all necessary records accurately and completely
● communicate and enforce the progressive discipline plan
● perform certain additional duties as assigned including but not limited to lunch
supervision, field trip supervision, student support, counseling students with academic
problems and providing at least one day per week of after-school office hours for students
● assume a leadership role in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations
● participate in school meetings, including parent meetings
● participate in staff meetings and professional development provided by PCI
● familiarize themselves with the information and procedures explained in the Student-Parent Handbook and the Teacher Handbook, and act in accordance with these policies
● be present and prepared for the first morning of “teacher week” and be prepared to be in school for at least two days after students’ last day
● adhere to a responsible pattern of conduct and demeanor
● treat students, families, faculty, and staff with respect
● respect the right of each student to express his/her opinion
● deal justly and impartially with all students
● refrain from verbally or physically intimidating students
● express free, frank, and respectful opinions when participating in professional meetings with colleagues
● be physically present in their first period classrooms before 7:30 each day
● adhere to the student dress code with clean, modest attire (no stains, rips, revealing clothes or inappropriate slogans)
● complete all lesson preparation before class begins
● use planning periods to plan lessons, develop curriculum, and collaborate with educational consultants and co-teachers
● refrain from using email during class periods
● refrain from using Facebook and other social networking tools not related to work during school hours
● refrain from taking phone calls during class periods, except during exceptional circumstances with the Director’s permission
● perform other duties as assigned
Teachers who stay on for the following school year are paid $800 per month in July and August. We will purchase a plane ticket for you to come to Guatemala, and a van ticket for your trip from the airport to Panajachel. We offer ten personal/sick days per school year. Returning teachers may carry their unused days forward into the new school year, when they will be available only as sick days.
