The Appliance Standards Awareness Project, part of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), seeks a qualified outreach and coalition-building associate. ACEEE, a leading nonprofit research organization based in Washington, DC, conducts independent analysis and develops transformative policies to build a vibrant and equitable economy that uses energy more productively, protects the environment, and promotes the health, safety, and well-being of everyone.

Position description 

The outreach and coalition-building associate serves as a core member of a team working to achieve greater climate, economic, and equity benefits from appliance, lighting, and equipment efficiency standards. The person in this position will build support for federal efficiency standards through outreach and coalition building, particularly focusing on amplifying the voices of environmental justice activists, low-income consumers, and public health experts while also expanding support among other allies, including businesses and utilities, labor voices, and state and local policy makers. This job provides an opportunity to create real change by shaping and advancing a proven policy approach. The associate reports to the state policy and outreach manager. 


Expectations and responsibilities 

• Identify, educate, and mobilize a range of voices to influence standards selected by the Department of Energy (DOE).  

• Broaden our coalition of supporters and deepen the engagement of current supporters. 

• Ensure viewpoints of coalition allies are heard in DOE regulatory proceedings. 

• Produce education and advocacy materials to support outreach efforts.  

• Encourage supporters to submit letters, sign joint letters and/or submit written testimony to DOE appliance standards rulemakings. 

• Produce fact sheets, sample comment letters, blog posts, and social media content to educate and build support for strengthened federal appliance standards.  

• Coordinate and convene our coalition of supporters as needed.  

• Represent ASAP at conferences and policy meetings. 


Qualifications 

The position requires strong interpersonal skills, the willingness to work as part of a team to achieve objectives, and the ability to work on several ongoing projects with competing deadlines. Strong candidates will have an awareness of and respect for cultural and individual values, use time efficiently, and respond constructively when confronted with challenges.  

Required: 

• Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant work experience 

• Excellent oral and written communication skills 

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and complete tasks independently 

• Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office 

Preferred: 

• Experience working on federal policy 

• Familiarity with energy efficiency and regulatory and/or legislative processes 

 

Preferred start date: July 15 or as soon as a suitable candidate is found. 

 

Location: Geographically flexible; Washington, DC, preferred 

 

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary range is $50,000–$65,000. ACEEE’s generous benefits package includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike share benefits; three weeks of vacation in the first year and four weeks thereafter.
