Position Title: National Director Social Justice Organizing

Reports To: President/Senior Lecturer

Background:

Repairers of the Breach, Inc is a nonprofit organization based in Goldsboro, North Carolina, that seeks to build a moral agenda that uplifts our deepest moral and constitutional values to redeem the heart and soul of our country. We organize, train, and work with a diverse group of poor and low wage people, activists, and faith leaders from every US state and the District of Columbia who are rebuilding, raising, and repairing the moral infrastructure of our county. Today, our movement is expanding nationally through our work on the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival (PPC). Repairers of the Breach, along with the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights, and Social Justice, are the anchoring organizations of the PPC: A National Call for Moral Revival.

The PPC: A National Call for Moral Revival is a movement building organism uniting tens of thousands of people across the country to challenge the interlocking injustices of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy and militarism, ecological devastation and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism. The PPC was launched with 40 days of action in Spring 2018, with a historic 6 weeks of nonviolent moral fusion direct action in over 35 states across the country. Since then, the PPC has grown to include 43 state campaigns and continues to organize to shift the narrative and build power among poor and impacted communities by broadening and deepening our base and registering people for a movement that votes. 

Job Summary:  

Repairers of the Breach is seeking an experienced and passionate leader who shares our vision of building a broad national moral fusion movement across the country. As National Director Social Justice Organizing with Repairers of the Breach, the primary responsibilities will be to direct all social justice organizing activities of Repairers of the Breach and the PPC.  Planning and implementing campaign activities with a talented team of people and ensuring the coordination of the field activities:  communications, theomusicology & cultural arts, faith, partner, and policy work of the campaign.

Essential Job Functions:

Planning and Implementing Organizing Drives and Activities:

  • Assist in setting organizing strategy and goals for Repairers of the Breach
  • Assist in setting strategy and goals for the overall Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. Work with Campaign Co-Chairs and the Leadership Team to develop overall movement strategy, tactics, and plans.
  • Develop implementation plans for campaign activities ranging from mass mobilizations to coordinated multi-state direct action to long-term base-building. Work with the national teams of the PPC to implement these activities. Make adjustments to the plans as new opportunities arise. 
  • Maintain an understanding of the organizing efforts in each state campaign, the infrastructure development of each state campaign, the organizing drives and activities-especially those led by poor and low-income people-that state campaigns are connecting with, and the existing and emerging leaders within state campaigns. Ensure that the campaign is nationalizing state-based struggles and creating national platforms for impacted state leaders all aimed at shifting the narrative and building power among the 140 million poor people. 
  • Keep state campaigns grounded in the principles and agreements of the PPC. When issues arise within state campaigns, determine what the Co-Chairs and Leadership Team need to help address and communicate that effectively. Troubleshoot with state leaders and field team where applicable and effective. 
  • Track progress and achievements and report to the Leadership Team  all campaign organizing efforts.

Team Management and Leadership

  • Manage the Field Team of the PPC. Develop their leadership as a team committed to fusion, building long-term power, and establishing meaningful relationships with state leaders.
  • Work to bring out the best in each Field Organizer with clear communication and compassion.
  • Work with the Coordinators/Directors of all national teams to ensure that the work of their team is implemented effectively. Ensure effective coordination and communication across teams and between the Leadership Team and other national teams. 
  • Build and model a culture across all teams of optimism, discipline, self direction, and teamwork rooted in caring for and supporting each other.
  • Effectively articulate long-term goals and vision and short-term tactics and strategy of the campaign and help other team members do the same. 
  • Assist with training, material development, and other duties as necessary. 

Qualifications: 

The National Director can expect to work irregular hours due to the nature of community organizing. All work, related travel has been temporarily halted. However, As the COVID-19 crisis abates, the National Director can expect extensive travel across the country. Travel will include regular staff meetings in North Carolina. 

The Ideal Candidate will have: 

  • A minimum seven years of experience with community organizing including experience related to base-building, training, leadership development, event planning, coalition building, and developing strategic campaigns.
  • Similar level of experience supervising staff, with a strong track record of building teams and developing staff leadership.
  • An ability to think through, plan and execute organizing campaigns. 
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational communication skills. 
  • Conflict resolution skills. 
  • An interest in and thoughtfulness about strategies for developing leaders. 
  • Strong digital skills and a familiarity with Google Drive and Microsoft products. Familiarity with Action Network and Slack is a plus. 
  • Ability to facilitate trainings, workshops and meetings in an engaging way. 
  • Align with the Fundamental Principles of the campaign including a passion for fighting systemic racism, poverty, the war economy/militarism and ecological devastation, and the distorted moral narrative of Christian nationalism.
  • Be comfortable organizing across difference including with poor folks, people of color, rural and urban communities, clergy and people of different faiths, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and with people of various abilities, including deaf and hard of hearing folks.
  • Have a B.A. degree or equivalent work experience
  • Having organized with or participated in Poor People’s Campaign activities in their state or nationally is a plus.
  • Spanish-speaking is a plus. 

The position is a full-time salaried position with health benefits.  Anticipated starting date -   no later than May 1, 2021.  Salary is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.  Candidates are encouraged to include their desired salary range in their cover letter.
