Position Overview 

 

The Senior Associate will work on the Boys and Men of Color Team and report directly to the Managing Director leading this portfolio. The Senior Associate will direct, manage, and support Alliance for Boys and Men of Color (ABMoC) policy campaigns.

 

Background on the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color


The Alliance for Boys and Men of Color is a network that works to ensure that males of color:

  • are physically and mentally healthy;
  • live in safe neighborhoods;
  • succeed in school and work; and
  • contribute to their families and communities.

In California, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color is led by grassroots organizations in the following communities:


  • Coachella
  • East Salinas
  • Fresno
  • Long Beach
  • Los Angeles
  • Oakland
  • Richmond
  • Riverside
  • Sacramento
  • San Bernardino
  • San Diego
  • San Jose
  • Santa Ana
  • Stockton


In 2018, the network has expanded to 8 additional states through resources facilitated by the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Catalyst Fund. Those states include:


  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • New Mexico
  • Texas


As a member of the Boys and Men of Color Team, the Senior Associate may also support other projects on that team, such as, but not limited to supporting efforts to develop innovative prevention and intervention strategies for domestic violence and sexual assault.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Management, development, and support of CA ABMoC policy campaigns.
  • Supporting mobilization of the ABMoC network to take action online and in-person.
  • Managing ABMoC network building to support policy priorities and campaigns.
  • Supporting campaign directors advancing ABMoC policy priorities.
  • Maintaining and communicating policy needs related to key legislative deadlines.
  • Liaising with the Assembly Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color and the Select Committee on Domestic Violence.
  • Providing technical assistance and support to help ABMoC places advance policy.
  • Conducting research and writing to inform, develop, or advance policy priorities and/or key issues.
  • Recruitment of new partners / leaders to support policy priorities.
  • Maintaining a BMoC focus in all advocacy activities.
  • Centering grassroots base-building organizations to lead on policy advocacy.

 

Desired Qualifications and Skills


  • Commitment to racial justice and social equity issues.
  • 7-10 years’ experience and/or training in issues of concern to boys and men of color.
  • Significant experience working with legislative offices to manage advocacy campaigns.
  • Experience developing, supporting, or leading municipal policy advocacy campaigns.
  • Experience working with or managing diverse networks, coalitions, or multistakeholder initiatives.
  • Experience working with philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of relationships in policy change work.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a self-starting member of a team.
  • Good time management skills and ability to effectively work on multiple projects.
  • Well-organized, adaptive, hard worker, able to work well under pressure and meet shifting deadlines.
  • Sense of humor, appreciation of the value of all kinds of diversity, good interpersonal skills, and willingness to travel.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

·        Successfully advance local and state policy and systems change priorities.

·        Develop a CA advocacy strategy with processes and protocols.
