Bard College seeks a Development Manager for the Bard Early Colleges (BEC), a nationally recognized network of schools that bring the best of a selective liberal arts college program into public high schools so as to more fully engage students’ full intellectual potential. Bard College currently operates nine early college campuses in partnership with public school systems, providing as much as a two-year, tuition free Associates in Arts Degree program within the four years of high school. The Bard Early College campuses are in New York City (the Lower East Side, Queens, and Harlem), Newark, New Orleans, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Hudson (New York State). Approximately 2,700 students in total attend these nine schools, which have been lauded for their challenging curriculum, passionate teachers and engaged students, and for their success in enabling students of all backgrounds to enter and complete top four-year college degree programs with advanced standing.
The BEC schools are currently supported by a combination of public and private funding. Increased philanthropic giving will be key to BEC’s sustainability and growth. The Development Manager is charged with increasing financial support for the BEC Schools and strengthening communications with its constituents. The Development Manager should be an experienced fundraiser and strategic thinker with a passion for improving public education for young people and a commitment to educational opportunity, equity, and excellence. The Development Manager will report to the Bard Vice President for Early Colleges and will work closely with the Office of Development and Alumni/ae Affairs at Bard College and also supervise one part-time support staff associate.
The Development Manager will:
- Develop a comprehensive strategic plan to meet annual and long-term fundraising goals,including support for special projects, campaigns, and events
- Cultivate and solicit new donors and continue to foster relationships with current and previous donors
- Develop and support the Bard Early Colleges Advisory Board, both individually and as a group, as well as other related BEC school support groups
- Cultivate relationships with current parents, alumni parents and the PTA organizations at each of the BEC schools
- Cultivate and solicit BEC alumni/ae
- Collaborate with the BEC Data and Evaluation Associate, Programs Associate, and Finance Assistant to establish and maintain donor database systems, gift acknowledgment procedures, annual appeals, and events.
Successful candidates will possess knowledge of education funders and the New York metropolitan area philanthropic and donor communities and have a proven track record in raising at least $2 million annually. The candidate will possess excellent project management and communication skills; have the ability to connect with donors, members of the philanthropic community, parents and alumni; and be an effective and engaged team player. In addition, s/he must be a self-starter and an independent worker and be diplomatic, analytical, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The Development Manager will be based in New York City.
