OVERVIEW

The ACLU is seeking a Special Assistant who will work with the Chief People Officer (CPO) to help build and sustain a best in class human resources operation and program that establishes a new standard in non-profit human capital management. Reporting directly to the CPO, the Special Assistant will help execute short and long-term priorities of the CPO and Human Resources (HR) team for a growing employee base of over 500 people across multiple national office locations. The Special Assistant to the CPO will be responsible for helping manage internal and external projects and workflow, coordinating certain cross-functional initiatives, managing HR communications, and providing logistical and administrative support to the CPO. The Special Assistant to the CPO will also serve as a liaison to counterparts in senior leadership teams of the organization to enhance coordination, collaboration, and cross-departmental communication and work of principals to advance the mission and strategic goals and priorities of the ACLU.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Support the day-to-day work and long-term priorities of CPO, including workflow management

·        Manage special projects and initiatives, and conduct research and analyses, at the direction of CPO; topics may include people management, organizational design, culture, learning and development, recruiting, retention, staff engagement, professional development, diversity initiatives, and performance

·        Drive efficiencies and accountability for internal HR team through team meeting coordination and deliverables follow-through

·        Serve as a clearinghouse for HR communications and correspondence, including internal policy documents – editing, standardizing, and consolidating all internal and external messages to ensure consistency of voice and perspective

·        Develop, draft, and implement regular organization-wide communication(s) from HR; liaise with communications, digital, internal communications counterparts as necessary

·        Coordinate CPO’s cross-functional work, including convening key stakeholder meetings and liaising with key counterparts throughout organization to ensure alignment

·        Provide logistical and administrative support to CPO, including scheduling

·        Eventually manage a small team of interns

·        Some travel may be required

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

·        Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels

·        Demonstrated track record of success in complex, fast paced work environments with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

·        Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to exercise a high level of discretion

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills; experience in communications, as well as web and digital platforms, a plus

·        Creative, critical, strategic thinker who is self-motivated, possessing the ability to operate as well independently as part of a team

·        Strong analytical and reasoning skills, comfortability with data analysis and numerical reasoning as well as Excel and PowerPoint, a plus

·        Willing to conquer the “small tasks” with an understanding of their vital importance to the success of the broader mission

·        Dedication to the mission of the ACLU and a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance
