Urban Youth Alliance International (UYAI) is an indigenous, multi-cultural youth organization that fosters youth leadership. In 2000, Urban Youth Alliance launched BronxConnect to serve court-involved youth and young adults in the Bronx. BronxConnect has served more than 2,300 youth in its alternative justice programs, and is the only Bronx-based Alternative-to- Incarceration (ATI) Program serving Bronx young adults. Since 2000, UYAI has developed into a well-respected, multi-service agency, operating additional successful initiatives, including re- entry and Cure Violence programming to reduce gun violence.

Position:

UYAI seeks a driven, dynamic, and enthusiastic Community Organizer. The Community

Organizer will work to build youth leadership and grassroots political power in Bronx and Upper Manhattan communities impacted by mass incarceration. The role includes working alongside criminal justice impacted youth and adults to train and support them as they organize their own communities. The Organizer will work with impacted individuals to develop and implementcampaigns on policing and juvenile/criminal justice reform at both the city and state levels. Theyare willing to leverage their own networks, platforms, and social media to amplify the organizingwork and the voices of Bronx and Upper Manhattan youth and families who are re-shaping the criminal and juvenile and justice systems.

Job activities will include, but are not limited to: leading organizing training programs, coalition building,lmeaodbeilriszhaitpiodne,vceolmopmuenit,yboausetr-ebaucihlding, event planning, monitoring the implementation of

legislation and non-legislative city and state plans, communications, and drafting public education/advocacy materials.

The ideal candidate is an organizer with at least two years of experience who is committed to UYAI’s mission to keep youth out of jail for life. They are adaptable and effective in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.

Given UYAI’s significant growth and historical roots in advocacy, this is an exciting

opportunity. The role could help positively redefine criminal justice in New York City and New York State.

Responsibilities include:

• Membership Base Building and Recruitment: Conduct base building activities and achieve targeted membership recruitment goals, including outreach to current and/or former UYAI participants, as well as other individuals and organizations conducting criminal justice services (i.e. Alternative-to-Incarceration, re-entry), court houses, and other venues as directed.

• Leadership and Advocacy Development: Conduct trainings on advocacy and organizing knowledge and skills with the ultimate goal of having people who are impacted by mass incarceration actively participating in the planning and legislation affecting their lives.

• Legislative Preparation: Prepare members to actively participate in meetings with partners, coalitions, and lawmakers.

• Campaign coordination: Provide guidance to members around identifying organizing andadvocacy issues, and developing strategies/ implementation.

• Event Preparation: Plan and coordinate events (press conferences, public hearings, meetings, presentations, and conferences).

• Mobilization: Turn out large number of members to actions, rallies, meetings, etc.

• Phone banking: Candidate must be comfortable with phone calls and conducting mass phone banking to ensure turnout at key events.

• Member Phone banking: Coordinate and assist with phone-banking for members.

• Membership meetings: Convene regular membership meetings and smaller campaign/committee meetings.

• Electronic and Paper Recording: Record and input member information into a centralized system.

• Analyzing and tracking legislation and campaign-related media.

• Logistics: Demonstrated experience managing projects and planning advocacy events.

• Collaboration: Collaborating with other UYAI staff/teams and external partners and allies (grassroots and community-based agencies, advocacy organizations, and service providers.

• Writing: Developing materials for policymakers, community partners and the press, including issue briefs, fact sheets, and information packets; drafting material for press releases; working with members and the Director of Development to draft letters to the editor, opinion editorials, etc.

Qualifications

UYAI seeks a candidate with the following qualities and skills:

• At least two years of successful experience in community organizing required • Experience working with Latino and African-American families

• Fluency in Spanish a plus

• Applicants from the South Bronx or Upper Manhattan are encouraged to apply

• Passion for urban youth and working knowledge of social and racial justice are a must

• Comfortable with being a self-starter and a problem-solver

• Comfortable using personal network and social media to advance UYAI organizing work and amplify impacted voices

• Excellent communication and written skills

• Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills

• Team player comfortable working in a fast-paced, quickly evolving environment

• Basic computer skills, including ability to use the internet, email, Microsoft Word and Excel required

• Experience with facilitating meetings and trainings, and/or coordinating coalitions•

• Commitment to advancing social racial justice and developing the leadership of those directly impacted by the criminal justice system
