ReThink Media’s Peace & Security program has three principal areas of focus. The first focus is on building the strategic media capacity of organizations working for nuclear arms control and disarmament. In this capacity we provide media skills training, we develop shared resources, and we help coordinate media engagement for maximum impact.

The second focus is on supporting organizations working for a more peaceful foreign policy including organizations advocating for the civilian victims of US military actions.

And the third area of focus is building the short- and long-term capacity of individual organizations to drive their messages, place their spokespeople, and engage their target audiences.

Across all of this, we are deeply committed to an agenda of diversifying the voiceshare of spokespeople on these issues and to specifically support an increase in media placements for BIPOC spokespeople, women, and people from marginalized communities.

ReThink’s approach to communications is firmly grounded in movement building. Our goal is to demonstrably help organizations become stronger, faster, more agile, and more effective in their media work.

We currently have unique flexibility in considering candidates who might serve as either the Director or the Associate Director of our Peace & Security program. Director candidates should have a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in progressive advocacy and strategic communications as well as prior experience successfully supervising full-time staff. Associate Director candidates should have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience and may be newer to direct supervision. The Associate Director position is, in essence, intended as a Program Director-in-training role.

The Associate Director and the Director directly supervise multiple Communications Associates and interns, as needed, and work with ReThink’s larger team, including the organization's Co-Founders and our unique Research & Analysis team. The Associate Director is supervised by the Program Director for Peace & Security, or by the Director of Programs when the Program Director position is vacant. The Program Director for Peace & Security is directly supervised by the Director of Programs.

The (Associate) Director works with partner organizations to coordinate joint rapid response campaigns informed by extensive news coverage monitoring and utilizing tailored press lists. They also help facilitate social media campaign work, monitoring and analyzing online metrics, providing groups with training in the use of social media tools, and the crafting and disseminating of content in support of existing initiatives.

With regard to reports and deadlines, the division of labor and responsibility will be determined at least 30 days prior to any deadline.
  • Oversee the drafting of timely and effective strategic communications guidance, talking points, messaging advice, commentaries, or media statements at rapid-response moments or ahead of known media opportunities.
  • Support the individual media work of aligned groups. This often includes assisting groups in developing a strategic communications plan, implementing media strategies, building press lists, assisting in the editing and development of media content, assisting with pitching and placement, providing media training, and conducting audits of coverage.
  • Collaborate with the Research & Analysis Team on longer-term projects such as media and public opinion audits and coverage analysis of specific issues, frames, and outlets, message- testing, and the development of media accountability campaigns.
