Summary

United Ways of California seeks a Communications Manager to lead all internal and external communications concerning United Ways of California (UWCA). In this newly created position, the successful candidate will make recommendations for the most effective use of communications resources, manage the editorial calendar and social media channels, secure earned media, and support the day-to-day communications activities for the organization.


This position will elevate and promote United Ways of California and its programs including Cal-Savers, VITA/EITC, public policy initiatives, annual Capitol Day and state conference and other program areas as assigned through clear, concise and informative content which is delivered through our website, newsletters and other promotional materials. 


United Ways of California is a virtual organization and the position will report to the President & CEO with a high level of autonomy.


Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

1. Set overall communications, marketing and branding strategy goals and priorities to inform messaging and tactics for UWCA programs and initiatives

2. Draft press releases and advisories, op-eds, CEO statements and other content for a variety of internal and external audiences, including donor communications in clear and accessible language

3. Oversee website, newsletters, email marketing, social media strategy, video production, editorial calendar, member communications and graphic design of collaterals such as flyers, brochures and toolkits 

4. Craft strategy for public engagement, messaging and storytelling related to UWCA’s programs

5. Manage media relations and cultivate relationships with journalists and influencers in local, state and national media outlets; create and maintain press lists; track media coverage

6. Pitch coverage of UWCA’s work and impact and prep staff interviews

7. Serve as first point of contact for members of the media

8. Write materials on tight deadlines to meet diverse messaging needs

9. Edit all mass communications created by staff for clarity, consistency, voice, and message

10. Measure communications efforts in order to evaluate return on investment and develop ongoing improvement methodology

11. Stay informed about best practices in nonprofit communications and marketing


Time

Full-time, 40 hours a week. 


Location

Virtual office; Candidates based in a major media market in California such as Los Angeles, Sacramento or Bay Area preferred

• Resource development: Help bring resources and funding to United Ways through regional and statewide collaboratives, leveraging the work of the many to achieve the goals of all, and also provide a central point of contact for donors wishing to support United Ways at a regional and state level
