The Association for Neighborhood & Housing Development (ANHD) is a member-association of community groups throughout New York City working to ensure the right to affordable housing and thriving equitable neighborhoods for all New Yorkers.

ANHD seeks a Senior Equitable Economic Development Organizer to work with community-based grassroots organizers to fight for a new vision for community led economic development. Equitable economic development empowers low wealth communities, immigrant communities, and communities of color in accessing good jobs and stable neighborhoods. If there is racial and economic justice, there is economic opportunity.

The Senior Equitable Economic Development Organizer is responsible for building and exercising the relationships necessary to effectively grow and maintain existing coalitions, including the Industrial Jobs Coalition and United for Small Business NYC, and for organizing allies from all sectors to win campaign goals. The organizer will work closely alongside the Policy Director, Director of Organizing and Advocacy, ANHD members, and movement allies to develop and launch a broad visionary set of demands for equitable economic development that guide and inform individual policy campaigns. ANHD’s work is member driven and led; in order to ensure successful campaigns, the organizer must build strong relationships and support the leadership of others.

Responsibilities

  • Engage, educate, and mobilize ANHD member-organizations and other city-wide allies in support of equitable economic development and economic justice advocacy and organizing
  • Develop economic development advocacy campaigns and coordinate throughout to ensure that campaigns serve grassroots community’s needs and build local power and leadership among those most impacted by economic injustice.
  • Coordinate with allied organizations working to advance equitable economic development in New York City including other non-profit organizations, trade associations, think tanks, and research institutions.
  • Lead the campaign / coalition coordination duties including developing campaign strategy, power-mapping, managing campaign committees and working groups, meeting facilitation, working in partnership with allies, and organizing campaign events.
  • Develop trainings and workshops on key Equitable Economic Development issues to inform ANHD members and stakeholders in order to expand capacity and knowledge about critical issues.
  • Work closely with all ANHD staff to ensure our Equitable Economic Development advocacy and organizing are well integrated with ANHD’s and our members’ work on other issue areas, particularly land use and affordable housing.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years organizing experience in economic justice, labor, or related fields
  • Significant coalition coordination experience, preferably bringing together grassroots and policy organizations
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders and partners, including community leaders, policy experts, elected officials, agency staff, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work alongside low wealth communities of color & immigrant communities
  • A belief in grassroots organizing as a vehicle to build power to address systemic inequality and injustice
  • Interest in working in a highly collaborative environment, and ability to independently keep projects moving
  • Comfort juggling responsibilities & prioritizing across multiple projects
