J-PAL North America is actively recruiting for a full-time Development Coordinator to contribute to its mission of reducing poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. J-PAL North America conducts randomized evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and helps partners scale up effective programs. As a regional office of the global Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, J-PAL North America leverages research by affiliated professors from universities across the world to generate and disseminate rigorous evidence about which anti-poverty social policies work and why.

Opportunity Overview

As a member of the J-PAL North America team, you’ll be part of a Nobel-prize winning scientific movement that can transform US policy making. The Development Coordinator is responsible for conducting prospect research, analyzing and managing data, and providing logistical and operational support for a broad range of fundraising and operations management activities for J-PAL North America. Working closely with the Associate Director of Finance and Operations, the Executive Director and the Associate Director of Policy, the Development Coordinator will conduct donor research, manage the donor pipeline, assist with grant writing and proposal development, track fundraising activities, coordinate logistics and outreach, generate reports, and provide broader operational management support as needed for J-PAL North America. We are seeking a dynamic and motivated fundraising professional to assist and support execution of J-PAL North America’s donor engagement and stewardship strategies. The Development Coordinator will join a creative, energetic team, working closely with staff across J-PAL North America’s program areas to elevate our fundraising efforts. 

Key Responsibilities

Research, solicitation, proposal development, and stewardship(45%)

  • Conduct individual donor, foundation and corporate fundraising research to identify prospects
  • Coordinate with J-PAL NA staff, prospective donors and program officers, the Department of Economics, the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and MIT’s Central Development’s office on prospect research and solicitation by identifying and researching prospects and helping to identify and communicate funding needs
  • Write, edit and coordinate proposal development and submission
  • Draft a variety of written materials, including prospect briefing drafts and background information  Coordinate stewardship efforts by building appropriate systems to support donor engagement and stewardship of existing donors

Contact and information management (40%) 

  • Manage and update the donor pipeline tracker, liaise with various staff on status of solicitations, and create Salesforce contact and relevant financial reports to review and manage progress to fundraising goals
  • Create and maintain systems for systematic tracking of donor stewardship and other fundraising process documents as needed
  • Create documentation, train and support staff on J-PAL North America processes for soliciting funds and recording fundraising activities
  • Develop reports from Salesforce and the central development database as needed and make recommendations to help establish priorities
  • Create and implement organizational systems for effective file storage and knowledge management, including ensuring fundraising documents are well organized and named correctly in the shared drive and Salesforce

Logistical and operational support for J-PAL fundraising activities (15%)

  • Prepare briefs, materials, presentations, and agendas 
  • Schedule meetings, coordinate travel plans, and develop itineraries
  • Assist in management and execution of donor events


Qualifications

Commitment to Mission & Values: Cares personally and deeply about policy that has the potential to reduce poverty and the rigorous research that informs it. Demonstrates interest in poverty alleviation in the North American (primarily the United States) context in particular. Demonstrates a commitment to J-PAL North America’s values.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required. 

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a non-profit or academic setting is required. Previous experience in a fundraising or development role preferred.

Technical Skills: Actively demonstrates the technical skills and expertise to successfully execute tasks to which they are assigned and can apply those skills and expertise in different formats and to various types of audiences. Experience with using Microsoft office and/or Google applications and comfort learning new applications is required. Some experience with Asana and Salesforce is useful.  

Ownership of Work: Takes responsibility/is accountable for effectively completing assigned discrete tasks or projects with high attention to detail under direct supervision. Produces high quality work in the time expected; identifies and follows up as needed to ensure assignments are completed on time. 

Written Communication: Demonstrates strong writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders with minimal supervision from senior-level staff. Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail and accuracy related to preparation of materials and presentations and is able to analyze, synthesize and present information effectively.  

Oral Communication: Demonstrates strong active listening skills and accurately and succinctly communicates information orally with minimal supervision from senior-level staff.  

Task & Project Management: Demonstrates excellent project management skills. Takes on a process-oriented task, plans and organizes work, delegates appropriately, coordinates with others, establishes appropriate priorities and timelines, exercises follow through, and adds overall value to the process.  

Problem Solving/Decision Making: Demonstrates adeptness at analyzing facts, judgment, and strong decision-making ability. Responds to problems, issues, and opportunities. Collaborates as needed to identify a solution or response.
