The Opportunity and Candidate Profile
Rocketship is seeking to hire a Director of Humanities to help refine, innovate upon, and scale the Rocketship Humanities instructional approach to achieve the organization’s collective mission to eliminate the achievement gap in historically underserved communities through a rigorous, innovative personalized learning school model. This position will report into and be a trusted strategic and instructional advisor to the Chief Schools Officer (CSO).
The ideal candidate for the DoH at Rocketship is someone who has developed and/or led an instructional model that realized high levels of student achievement in an organization of similar scope and scale to that of Rocketship, especially an organization that is multi-site and multi-regional and helped lead the organization to even larger scale. Direct school leadership experience highly preferred. The DoH will be a critical partner to the CSO and Director of Schools (DoSs), and someone who is not afraid to engage in challenging discussions and share his/her opinion based on personal and professional experience. The successful DoH will gain the trust of Director of Schools, School Leaders and staff, and the organization as a whole and instill confidence in Rocketship’s quality of student achievement and continued leadership in personalized learning. The successful candidate will ensure that Rocketship maintains an instructional culture that puts Rocketeers first and ensures outstanding Humanities support to its schools. He or she will combine a capacity for systems-level and strategic thinking, deep pedagogical and instructional experience, an eye towards school leadership, careful attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills in building relationships with critical internal stakeholders.

The ideal DoH candidate has experience working in a dynamic, growing organization during a transformational phase - applying instructional expertise to achieve high quality achievement results and impact. S/he is entrepreneurial by nature and positively impacts both strategic and tactical initiatives by managing multiple projects at a time.
Serve as a trusted strategic advisor and the strong instructional and school model partner to the CSO and DoSs, supporting them to maintain and elevate the student achievement and long-term impact of this organization;
Lead a high-performing learning team of highly skilled and driven individuals who execute at the highest level of excellence and consistent with the culture and mission of the organization; oversee training and support for school-based staff in Humanities instruction and coaching across the network; model and sustain a culture of high performance and service orientation among team members;
Develop, lead, and implement the Humanities vision for Rocketship Public Schools, setting and monitoring academic priorities and goals; balancing consistency across Rocketship Public Schools with the unique needs of each school and region;
Develop ongoing training, coaching, and professional development programs for school leaders and teachers to ensure each school is staffed with high quality instructional staff and highly effective leaders while also providing thought partnership with the Director of Schools and school leaders in evaluating the effectiveness of programs as well as identifying and acquiring appropriate program resources to ensure that curricula are personalized, student-focused and aligned with school’s missions, core values, academic standards, and strategic goals;
Provide regular, in-person coaching and other support to school leaders as they conduct formal classroom observations, and provide feedback to teachers;
Maintain a close working relationship with other members of the Network Support Team (NeST—Rocketship’s centralized office that operates in support of its schools and regions), school directors, and all school staff (teachers, school leaders, support staff, etc.) to ensure exchange of best practices, coordination of efforts, and general support for the finance/ accounting department;
Ensure the Humanities Team is viewed as a positive support to the organization’s mission that is fully aligned with Rocketship’s Core Characteristics (Innovation, Pursuit of Excellence, Authenticity, Community, and Tenacity), and not as bureaucratic obstacles to serving the needs of the students.
Revising and create Common Core aligned Humanities curricular materials, including unit plans and assessments, in response to student achievement needs in grades TK-5
Lead a team to create and and build out key curricular supports
Lead content collaboration meetings for Principals and Assistant Principals so that they are set up for driving intellectual preparation structures on their campuses
Develop and execute systems to ensure leaders and teachers are effectively driving Humanities instruction on their campuses, such as monthly walkthroughs
Analyze data from network wide ELA assessments, including interims, STEP, etc. and engage in systems based on this data to ensure leaders and teachers are effectively driving Humanities instruction on their campuses
Develop world-class Professional Development to build skill in School Leaders and Teachers
Observe and coach leaders and teachers and following up with valuable written/oral feedback in order to improve leader/teacher practice and improve student outcomes
The ideal candidate should be a results oriented, determined, and a strong influencer with a record of experience that includes:
A belief in the mission and education model of Rocketship Education with the ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, flexible and autonomous environment.
A minimum of 5 years of broad instructional experience serving as an Instructional Leader a School and/or in a school network or district entity along with 5-10 additional years of successful instructional expertise in realizing high levels of student achievement in a complex, multi-site, multi-regional environment.
Strong pedagogical and personalize learning skills to effectively innovate upon the school model and systems to achieve greater student achievement outcomes and opportunities, whilst constantly thinking about, innovating upon and implementing new strategies and approaches to our personalized learning approach.
Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, the school network, and any external stakeholders.
Experience in an organization experiencing emerging growth.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and or Administrative Services Credential preferred.
