Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, World Music/CRASHarts (WM/CA) seeks a dynamic development executive to develop and lead the organization’s fundraising efforts and strategies for long-term organizational growth and sustainability. This position requires a director who is entrepreneurial, results-oriented, and ideally, passionate about the performing arts. The Director of Development will report to the Executive Director, be a member of the organization’s leadership team, and manage a two-person development office.

The Director of Development will take a leadership role in creating and implementing an integrated development strategy, with particular focus on building a strong major gifts program through individual giving and building relationships leading to corporate sponsorships. The Director of Development will work with the Board of Directors, the Development Committee, and the Executive Director to achieve WM/CA’s ambitious development plan. The Director of Development will have oversight for all other aspects of the organization’s fundraising including: membership and annual fund, foundation grants and research, special events, and Board support.  WM/CA’s annual budget is $2.4 million, with a goal to maintain 35% contributed income.



  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Associate Director, and Board of Directors to create and implement a strategic and diversified fundraising plan that will guide the organization to meet fundraising goals, maximizing opportunities for major gift, corporate, foundation, and public support
  • Expand and diversify WM/CA’s donor base by assuming the primary responsibility in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual and corporate contributions, and maintaining an active donor portfolio
  • Remain well informed of all current WM/CA programs, projects, and available gift opportunities to secure principal gifts and sponsorship in response to donor interests
  • Develop and manage the Board’s fundraising capacity to secure gifts by inspiring the team (staff, Board) and arming them with the tools needed to be successful
  • Assume oversight for the research and writing of high-quality foundation, corporate, and government grant proposals and reports, and the stewardship required to support ongoing funding through foundation and corporate support
  • Set annual benchmark goals and strategies, and leverage existing procedures for tracking, rating, and qualifying prospects, and for recording and reporting gifts
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and coordination of strategic and high-impact special events to promote the WM/CA mission
  • Represent WM/CA in a professional capacity at cultivation events, as well as numerous other civic and community events and forums

Board Liaison

  • Attend all Board meetings; prepare agenda and present development report
  • Maintain ongoing communication with Board regarding prospect cultivation, events, and general organizational communications
  • Along with Executive Director, support the Board with major gift solicitations
  • Serve as staff liaison to Board’s Development and Governance Committees
  • Identify and cultivate potential new Board members

Oversight and Administration

  • Ensure that the appropriate systems, staffing, and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals, including tracking donation records and prospects moves
  • Oversee prospect analysis and research, development databases, funder reports, and statistics related to annual goals and acquisition of individual prospects
  • Manage and mentor the Development Associate
  • Supervise and oversee PT grant writer/consultant as needed
  • Maintain overview of development income and expenses


The candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of professional development experience, including a record of successful solicitations of major gifts from individuals, and the capability to grow and manage a successful development operation. The candidate will have: the demonstrated ability to generate prospect leads, excellent networking and relational skills; strong interest in building the development function of WM/CA; proven problem-solving skills; seasoned experience with oversight of grant writing and database management; ability to work independently and as a team player; high-level analytical and organizational skills; exceptional writing skills; board management skills; special events knowledge; and, the ability to handle multiple projects. The candidate must exercise initiative in a hands-on environment, be able to work well with a diverse constituency, and have a commitment to excellence and to the mission of WM/CA.  Some on-site evening and weekend work at performance venues is required.

The candidate should have an entrepreneurial and creative approach to development, be very comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and display the highest professional ethics.  The overall ability to set, pursue, and attain achievable goals, regardless of obstacles and circumstances, will be a key quality.
