Overview:

A Better Childhood, a national organization dedicated to improving child welfare through the use of class action litigation, is seeking an attorney with 3-5 years of experience to help us develop and pursue new litigation throughout the country. The purpose of the litigation is to more firmly establish a concrete body of law to improve child welfare systems for both children in foster care and for those children under court supervision for abuse and neglect. Our work involves the investigation of child welfare systems, developing relationships with local communities, enlisting private law firms as partners, and bringing and prosecuting suits that will establish the rights of children to receive necessary, appropriate and legally-required services.

The work will be major, multi-year litigation involving important legal and public policy issues.

Responsibilities:

Attorneys will be based in New York City and will work on sites across the country. They will conduct legal research, develop legal theories, work with experts, learn the details of particular systems under scrutiny, and help shape the litigation to address the problems in those systems. The litigation will be intensive and fact-based, and will involve the interplay with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Admission to the bar in any jurisdiction
  • Minimum of three to five years of litigation or other legal experience, preferably in federal court
  • Excellent research, writing and organizational skill
  • Demonstrated interest in public interest work
  • Passion for ABC’s mission
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen and learn
  • Ability to thrive in a busy, multi-tasking and time-pressured environment
  • Accuracy, integrity and discretion
  • Willingness to travel - all travel will adhere to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions
  • Good sense of humor

ABC adheres to CDC, State and local orders with regard to COVID-19. Our NYC office is compliant with City and State re-entry mandates and open for flexible work schedules. While we continue to offer remote work schedules, we plan for a thoughtful and gradual return to the office.
