The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is seeking a highly effective Director of College-Going Culture to join our effort to improve learning and academic achievement for students in the Boyle Heights, South LA, and Watts communities. In collaboration with the Senior Vice President of School Culture, Partnership staff, school leaders, and counselors, the Director of College-Going Culture will support schools in counselor efficacy, A-G success, master scheduling, and in building a college-going culture which includes implementation of the College Compass(™), increasing college application, matriculation and ultimately completion. Additionally, they will support special leadership projects designed to coach schools through their improvement process. The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated self-starter committed to transforming educational opportunities for students in Los Angeles and will have significant experience in high school around instruction and/or counseling, building college-going cultures, leading professional development and coaching, and working with adults to reach ambitious goals. The ideal candidate has been a transformational school leader and/or can point to significant transformational outcomes for students at their site around college access and success.
Management of Projects & People (60% of time)
- Lead the College Compass initiative, a K-12 program at all 19 schools that helps students and families see themselves as future college students, helps them to track progress towards college readiness and success, and helps schools to plan age-appropriate activities to create a stronger college-going culture.
- Lead our work with AmeriCorps VISTA program which involves significant liaising with AmeriCorps Staff.
- Supervise 4 AmeriCorps VISTA members for the 2021-2022 school year with the opportunity to continue this high leverage partnership.
Change management with school leaders (20% of time)
- Coach school principals and assistant principals around change management necessary to shift school culture and function to better support college completion.
- Work collaboratively with administrative teams to unpack and remedy long standing barriers to college access at their school sites. This might include but is not limited to low A-G C or better rates, low staff expectations around college completion for their students, poor/late credit recovery systems, and master schedule course sequence issues.
Planning and executing professional development (20% of time)
- Co-lead the Restorative and College Culture Leads seminars and support teacher and counselor leaders with implementing social emotional learning and college-going culture work at their sites.
- Lead the College Counselor Convenings and help college teams at all 5 high schools with their college application and transition work.
- Work with college counselors throughout the year to ensure systems around college access are running smoothly at each school site.
- Co-lead the Counselor Convenings to support counselors from all 9 secondary schools with their college-readiness and success supports.
- Assist with the development of schools’ college-going goals as well as plans for increasing student motivation to attend and complete college
Collaborate across team and organizations (15% of time)
- Work collaboratively with the data and impact team to collect and manage college application and college success data and find ways to integrate that into school site planning and professional development
- Work collaboratively with the community partnerships team to manage and support college access partners and SAT prep partners
- Work collaboratively with the family engagement team to create opportunities for families to learn about college success including co-planning university day and other parent college activities.
- Participate in Partnership Systems Change meetings to guide the Partnership’s approach to our college impact systems change work.
- Participate as a member of the Academics Team, College Team and other relevant work groups to exchange information, coordinate activities, develop teacher support resources, and resolve issues or concerns
- Work collaboratively with the Senior Vice President of School Culture to maintain and further build the Partnership’s vision and approach to college going culture including building out a pipeline for Partnership students into 2 and 4 year colleges that meet our “Best Fit” criteria.

- Leadership experiences designing, organizing, and facilitating professional development for adult learners, as well as experience aligning highly impactful coaching cycles to the learning
- Experiences building college-going cultures as well as deep knowledge around A-G success
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire, and build strong working and mentoring relationships with adults
- Experience leading complex projects, including coordinating the work of individuals in different locations and who may have a variety of other priorities
- Experience supporting students or their families with college application process preferred
- Experience managing others preferred, including in informal or horizontal structures
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with administrative staff, instructional staff, and support staff

- At least 5 years of successful full-time teaching or school counseling experience
- At least 2 years of successful leadership experience within the school context (coach, department chair, BTSA coach, peer observer, etc.)
- An earned master’s degree or advanced degree preferred
- A proven record of academic success working with students in historically underserved schools and setting high expectations for teachers and students
- Completion of rigorous classroom observation training preferred; LAUSD candidates will be required to have completed observer training and show evidence of certification (or commit to in‐depth training)
- Ability to travel between school site and home office (must possess a valid Driver’s License)
- Smarter Balanced Item Reviewer and/or Writer a plus
- At least 3-5 years of school leadership experience preferred
- Proficient in Spanish preferred
