HEAF is a supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school and career.  HEAF identifies students in middle school and supports them to and through four-year colleges, through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs.

Summer Quest’s mission is to ignite intellectual curiosity, and to cultivate academic development through a variety of inquiry and project-based enrichment classes throughout the summer.  Our goal is to offer rising 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders an advantage for the upcoming school year.


Program Description:

  • Orientation: June 21st and 22nd
  • Summer Program: July 8th – August 9th
  • Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm & Friday, August 2nd, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Location: 80 Willoughby Street, Brooklyn, New York 11201


Summary:

Summer Quest SHSAT Prep instructors develop and implement a 4 week English curriculum that prepares students to successfully take the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), noting the changes in this years’ test. Students will learn test-taking strategies, and take practice exams. This class will culminate in student projects or group presentations. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize various instruction models. Teachers document student progress throughout the summer program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential.


Job Requirements:

  • B.A. in education, English, or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification in English or significantly experienced
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in middle school or high school
  • Experience in cooperative learning groups and inquiry-based learning techniques
  • Familiarity with the SHSAT and/or the High School application process in NYC
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff


Compensation:

$42/hour for instruction

$15/hour for meetings and administrative duties
