The Bronx Defenders (BxD) – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks a passionate individual with a commitment to social justice to fill a position as Director of Advancement.

 The Bronx Defenders is a public defender non-profit that works to radically transform how low-income people in the Bronx are represented in the legal systems. BxD seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic and diverse staff. Our staff of almost 400 includes interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, benefits specialists, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, organizers, mentors, a communications specialists who collaborate to provide holistic advocacy to address the causes and consequences of legal system involvement. Through this integrated team-based structure, we have utilized a groundbreaking, nationally recognized model of representation called holistic defense that achieves better outcomes for our clients. 

Each year, we defend more than 20,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing, we push for systemic reform at the local, state, and national levels. We take what we learn from the clients and communities that we serve and launch innovative initiatives designed to bring about real and lasting change.

The Director of Advancement plays a key role in the organization by strengthening current fundraising strategies and developing new ones. The Director of Advancement works under the supervision of the Managing Director of Strategic Partnerships and in partnership with the Executive Director, and is primarily responsible for leading all aspects of fundraising initiatives for individual giving, including annual fundraising campaigns and special events that seek support from individual and corporate donors. The Director of Advancement will also work closely with the Managing Director of Communications to support the organization’s reach and messaging through the implementation of written and digital content such as emails to donors, supporters, and partners. 

Responsibilities:

  • Under the leadership of the Managing Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Director of Advancement will co-create and manage an advancement plan and full private revenue portfolio for individuals, corporations, and partnerships in collaboration with the Associate Director of Philanthropic Partnerships
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit new individual and corporate donors and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy
  • Serve as primary lead in managing the planning and execution of fundraising events, including an annual gala that raises critical funds to support general operating funding for the organization as well as smaller fundraising and donor cultivation events
  • Create a Donor Communications Plan in partnership with the Managing Director of Communications to engage individual donors and acquire new ones through traditional media strategies and other creative acquisition campaigns
  • Use a constituent relationship management system to develop and maintain ongoing relationships through a content database, as well as oversee mechanisms to tailor contacts and provide relevant program updates with individual donors and corporate funders 
  • Identify, measure, and report on key performance indicators of success to accurately measure progress and implement new strategies Execute strategic prospect research on individuals and corporations in order to secure new financial support of the organization 
  • Manage timely and accurate gift processing and distribution of acknowledgment letters 
  • Manage, with support from the strategic communications team, donor facing products and messaging to ensure alignment with organizational views and values
  • Supervise and professionally develop an advancement team that includes an Advancement Officer

Qualifications 

Applicants must have: 

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in fundraising or development

Applicants must demonstrate: 

  • Commitment to challenging systemic injustice and carceral systems 
  • Effective communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively with lawyers, non-lawyers and administrative professionals  including finance and communications
  • Ability to multitask, maintain order and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, environment 
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality with sensitive matters
  • Ability to think critically and creatively in fast-paced settings
  • Ability to receive feedback constructively, reflect and shift behavior accordingly
  • Experience working in and with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically marginalized communities 
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate, and connect with people with various backgrounds, identities, and experiences 
  • Ability to form and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Commitment to raising one’s cultural consciousness and challenging oppressive practices on an interpersonal and institutional level
  • Effective verbal and written skills for direct fundraising appeals
  • Experience using a CRM system, Salesforce experience preferred but not required

Salary is commensurate with experience.  For candidates with directly relevant experience, the salary range for this position would be approximately $90,000-$100,000 depending on experience. Full-time employees are also eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including but not limited to medical, dental and vision coverage; a 403(b) plan with employer contribution; a generous vacation, sick leave, and parental leave policy.
