Haven is the Gallatin Valley's non-profit serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence, sex trafficking, harassment, and stalking. Founded in 1979, Haven provides a 24-hour support line, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, financial assistance, and counseling and support groups for survivors of intimate partner violence and/or family violence.
Haven’s Overnight Advocates are professionals trained to support survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and stalking. Advocates provide emotional support, crisis intervention, information and referrals, and assistance connecting with social services agencies and filling out paperwork both in person and over the support line to Haven’s participants.
The overnight advocate answers the 24-hour support line from 8:30pm to 7:30am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, ending Friday mornings. Overnight Advocates may transfer the support line to their cell phone and be on-call from home. On occasion, Overnight Advocates will need to respond in-person to the shelter, hospital emergency room or other location. The Overnight Advocate position is a part-time position without benefits.
● Answer support line during hours of work and record calls in participant interaction database
● Provide crisis intervention, follow-up, emotional support, advocacy, information, and referrals to crisis line callers; assess for suicide and overall safety and assist with safety plan creation.
● Respond in-person to emergency room, shelter, or law enforcement, when requested
● Provide transportation to participants as needed during overnight shift.
● Make arrangements for follow-ups for the following business day.
● Respond to shelter when alarm is triggered during the overnight shift, as needed.
● Arrange hotel/motel accommodations for emergency shelter; in-person check-ins as requested.
● Check in with full-time advocacy staff at beginning and end of each shift to communicate important participant information, as needed.
● Read all news, important call reports, and document important notes in shift-to-shift communication log (iCarol news)
● Report all emergencies immediately to the back-up staff person and consult as necessary to determine the safest plan of action.
● Must be able to get to the shelter within 30 minutes during the entire period of the shift.
● Accurately and consistently complete participant interaction report forms, participant profiles, shelter screening and intake forms, and maintain participant files by the end of each shift.
● Distribute check-out paperwork to participants leaving shelter, including check-out form, participant testimonial form, and shelter feedback survey.
● Manage receipts used for participant needs/food/gas, etc.
● Update financial assistance, donation request, and hotel tracking spreadsheets as required.
● Must be able to get to the shelter within 30 minutes during the duration of weekend shift.
● Must have consistent and secure cell phone service, internet access, personal or work computer, and transportation/vehicle.
● Must have a secure location within residence to take support line calls, to maintain participant safety and confidentiality.
● Assist with volunteer projects/coordination during hours of work, as requested by the Intervention Manager.
● Other duties as requested by the Intervention Manager or full-time staff on back up support during shift.
● High school diploma or equivalent
● Knowledge of and experience in the fields of domestic violence, sex trafficking, sexual assault, harassment, and stalking
● Excellent oral and written communication skills
● Highly organized, accurate, flexible, innovative, and positive attitude
● Ability to make prompt decisions under high-stress conditions
● Comfortable working and making decisions independently
● Ability to mediate and resolve conflicts while providing support to shelter residents
● Understanding of mental health, trauma, co-occurring issues, diversity, and cultural competency
● Available to commit to at least one overnight shift per month (one shift is an entire week, Monday evening to Friday morning, of working hours 8:30pm-7:30am each of those days)
● Ability to set boundaries with participants
● Bachelor’s Degree
● Experience with crisis/suicide intervention and trauma-informed advocacy
● Experience with coordination of local, state, and nationwide referrals
● Knowledge of Montana laws for domestic violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, and stalking
● Ability to attend direct service meeting from 1pm – 2pm and all staff meeting from 2pm – 3pm every Friday

Domestic violence and sexual assault training programs as requested by Intervention Manager
CPR/First Aid training as requested by Intervention Manager
ASIST suicide intervention training as requested Intervention Manager
Other training/shadow shifts as requested by Intervention Manager
PHYSICAL DEMAND AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the environment is usually quiet.
During the overnight shift, the overnight advocate will primarily be working independently, but will have support from a back-up staff person who will be on-call throughout the night to consult in case of emergency. This staff person will respond to all phone calls within 60 minutes and will be available to assist with emergencies as needed.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Intervention Manager
HOURS OF WORK: Must be able to commit to at least 12 shifts annually, with shifts beginning at 8:30pm and ending at 7:30am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. When conflicts arise, overnight advocates are responsible for switching shifts with or finding another overnight advocate to cover the shift.
PROBATION PERIOD: 6 months
COMPENSATION: $350 per week + $10/hour for attendance at staff meetings and/or trainings
