Donor Relations Associate

Location of Position: Marin Headlands, Sausalito, California

Reports to: Senior Manager, Donor Relations

Hours: 40 hours per week, M-F

Position Classification: This is a full-time exempt position.

Position Overview

The Donor Relations Associate is a key member of The Marine Mammal Center’s Donor Relations team. In this role you will focus on donor cultivation and stewardship strategies that inspire donors to continue supporting the organization and ensure donors understand and are proud of the impact they have made with their giving. Areas of responsibility include events, responding to donor inquiries by phone, email or mail, and robust donor acknowledgement and engagement. This position reports directly to the Senior Manager, Donor Relations and is a member of the Center’s Development and Communications team.

An ideal candidate for this position is detail oriented and wants to leverage their project management and communication skills to amplify the mission of The Marine Mammal Center. You work well with diverse communities, and immediately build rapport with staff, donors, volunteers, vendors, board members and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • In tandem with the Senior Manager, Donor Relations, work to grow the sustaining member and middle donor programs and ensure high rates of retention from current members to meet annual targets.
  • Attend internal prospect and cultivation meetings, as needed, to discuss fundraising priorities and methods and make recommendations on cultivation strategies.
  • Support donor engagement and fundraising events, including planning, speaker preparation, invitation text and RSVP collection, event execution and follow up tasks.
  • Report on event outcomes and utilize event metrics to make event recommendations for future success.
  • Respond to donor phone and email requests and questions with professionalism and warmth.
  • Thank donors in a timely manner via phone, email and hand-written cards.
  • Keep donors engaged and informed about the organization’s work through stewardship updates and tours.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate database records for donor interactions and event participation.
  • Work with Marine Mammal Center staff in relevant functional areas to ensure alignment of goals, strategy and cross-team collaboration.
  • Willingness to support and participate in the Center’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, initiatives, and trainings. 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Two+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising or sales/event planning/customer service.
  • A strong commitment to the mission and goals of The Marine Mammal Center.
  • Ability to work independently to manage projects and track schedule to attain results.
  • Superb relationship management, interpersonal, digital, written and oral communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks and finish projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to work evenings, weekends and to travel on occasion.
  • Commitment to comprehensive record keeping in donor database.
  • Adherence to the AFP code of ethical standards.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required, familiarity with Raiser’s Edge CRM database helpful.
  • Ability to connect with people from different backgrounds and build relationships across differences.

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to sit/ in an office environment for extended periods of time.  
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment 90% of the time.

Work Environment

  • May involve smells associated with animals and the care of animals. 
  • May involve working in an open office space that can be loud.
