Description

The American Federation of Arts (AFA), the leader in traveling exhibitions internationally, is seeking a Curatorial Assistant. AFA is a non-profit organization founded in 1909, and is dedicated to enriching the public’s experience and understanding of the visual arts through organizing and touring art exhibitions for presentation in museums around the world, publishing exhibition catalogues featuring important scholarly research, and developing educational programs. General Duties and Responsibilities:    

  • Coordinate and provide administrative assistance with curatorial aspects of select exhibitions
  • Draft and edit; proposals, checklists, marketing materials, and exhibition didactics in consultation with Curator and Guest Curators  
  • Update exhibition budgets
  • Draft guest curator and author contracts
  • Assist Curators with developing lists of prospective museums for exhibition tours
  • Work with Registrarial Department on logistics relating to exhibition tours
  • Liaise with curatorial staff at presenting museums and provide feedback on various issues
  • Perform administrative tasks such as drafting correspondence, creating and tracking timelines, updating calendars, and responding to queries
  • Input, edit, and update various lists and forms in the exhibitions database (checklists, lender lists, etc.)
  • Complete documentation related to loan negotiation
  • Work with curators to secure rights and reproduction permissions and other materials for exhibition publications and educational materials
  • Assist with research for exhibitions and loans
  • Provide general; set up, minutes and other tasks for curatorial, exhibitions committee, and other meetings.
  •  Other related duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art History or similar field from accredited educational institution required.
  • 1- 3 years of experience in an art museum setting either in the Education or Curatorial department
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload and handle many tasks simultaneously and keen attention to detail
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Filemaker (or other database management software), PowerPoint
  • Strong team-player
