Temporary LEAD Colloquium Instructor (Leadership, Engagement, Achievement, Development)

The LEAD Instructor is a key role for delivering on The Washington Center’s promise to students to provide them with a transformational experience – setting them on a course of achievement, leadership and civic responsibility. In this role, the LEAD Instructors are responsible for working directly with college and university students to provide excellent instruction, advisement, and professional exploration through the LEAD curriculum and internship experience. The LEAD Instructor plays a vital role in helping students explore certain careers paths through advising and mentoring throughout the semester. Ideal start date for the position is August 15th, and the position will run through December 21st, 2018.
- Provide input into and disseminate LEAD syllabus that includes learning objectives that are stated in terms of student learning outcomes, learning activities to achieve those objectives, and method(s) of evaluation.
- Provide learning activities that stimulate student involvement, encourage critical reflection and critical thinking, small group discussion and take into consideration different learning styles and backgrounds.
- Provide regular and consistent feedback and critique on assignments throughout the semester, including but not limited to the assignments outlined in the syllabus.
- Evaluate students' work according to approved rubrics and departmental standards.
- Meet scheduled LEAD course timeframes.
- Host orientation sessions to prepare students for academic rigor as well as professional development impacts in their internship.
- Guide up to 40 students per semester in experiences incorporating DC-centric career explorations during the term.
- Monitor student/supervisor relationship for professional development and enhancement of professional skill sets.
- Serve as a liaison between the student and the internship supervisor for problems that may occur.
- Advise and support students when issues arise that impact their TWC experience
- Develop relationship with internship supervisor and internship site that promotes TWC and provides an opportunity to guide the supervisor’s role in educating students in a professional setting. Provide documented feedback to Office of Internship Site Relations (OISR) on this.
- Play active role in TWC programs including, but not limited to, Orientation, Commencement, and Simpson-Mineta Leadership Series (SMLS).
- Mentor students while they are in the program, outlining and monitoring learning goals, establishing action steps, and documenting overall progress throughout the semester.
- Provide individualized advising for students throughout the internship experience especially in the area of career development.
- Fully participate in training and development options as well as engaging in additional educational enhancements internally and externally.
- Fully utilize and adopt curriculum management systems and technological processes including timely communication with students.
- Provide designated manager(s) with updates and briefings on current internship sites as well as potential new host sites.
· When necessary, provide background information to and coordinate with managers regarding student issues that will be provided to Office of College and University Relations and the liaison.
Required Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Master’s degree in Experiential Education, International Education, Academic Advisement, or other related degrees
- One to three years of work experience.
- Experience in leading professional exploration and development in a variety of fields
- Strong ability to advise students regarding their career and professional goals
- Experience instructing students in a classroom or small group setting or conduct training programs/seminars/workshops on relevant educational topics required
Preferred Education/Qualifications and Experience:
· Experience in working with college students in advising, mentoring, teaching or supervision capacities within specific area desired
· Experience in leading professional exploration and development in a variety of fields
- Knowledge regarding career development and coaching are desired.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
