Subspecialists are equipped to treat allergies, inner ear and hearing disorders, head and neck cancers, speech and voice disorders and much more. Our diverse programs ensure every patient utilizes their senses as best as possible in order to lead healthy and productive lives. Through the section’s comprehensive research efforts, faculty members and researchers hope to find new and better ways of treating a broad range of diseases. One such research project, which has received widespread national attention and support, is Project Aspire and its sister project the Thirty Million Words Initiative, which aim to use family-centered curriculum and parent language to bridge the achievement gap between groups of children.


Job Information

Job Summary:


The TMW Center at the University of Chicago seeks a Research Specialist 2 to provide project management for testing two new TMW interventions.  Both TMW interventions are online professional development for essential care providers in young children’s lives: early childhood educators and pediatric healthcare providers.  The TMW-Early Childhood Educator (TMW-ECE) intervention will be tested in a randomized controlled trial (RCT).  This individual will lead the planning, preparation, and launch of the RCT to evaluate the efficacy of the TMW-ECE program, and provide ongoing management of the study once launched.  This individual will also lead online testing of the TMW-Pediatrics program to contribute to its further iterative development and plan and prepare for future broader testing, including an RCT evaluation.  The ideal candidate must be a disciplined, experienced project manager with demonstrated expertise in driving timelines toward on-time deliverables.


Responsibilities:

TMW-Early Childhood Educator (est 25-30 hr/wk)


  • Assist in the selection of a Learning Management System to facilitate the delivery of the TMW-Early Childhood Educator curriculum; incorporate curriculum and study assessment content in the system for use in the RCT evaluation
  • Manage Learning Management System content and provide frontline support and technical assistance to study participants using the system
  • Create and drive a timeline to support the directors and PI to finalize TMW-ECE RCT study design, including a power analysis, measure selection, and study timeline
  • Project manage the project, including key project benchmarks and deliverables, and the timely launch and completion of the RCT
  • Develop a participant recruitment strategy, including building partnerships with early learning networks and agencies to advertise and disseminate study materials
  • Support the Manager of Lab and Research Operations in the development of the study’s IRB protocol
  • Maintain clear and regular communication with the Director of Research Operations, PI, and TMW Center Senior Leadership

TMW-Pediatrics (est 10-15 hr/wk)


  • Assist in the selection of a Learning Management System to facilitate the delivery of the TMW-Pediatrics curriculum; incorporate curriculum and study assessment content in the system for use in dissemination and evaluation
  • Manage Learning Management System content and provide frontline support and technical assistance to participants using the system
  • Develop an implementation and evaluation plan to disseminate TMW-Pediatrics for wider formative testing
  • Manage formative testing process to key project benchmarks and deliverables
  • Research distribution channels for future curriculum dissemination and integration into pediatric training and maintenance of certification requirements
  • Develop the scope, design, and project plan for broader testing, including RCT evaluation
