About NYLAG

Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a leading not-for-profit civil legal services organization advocating for adults, children, and families that are experiencing poverty or have low income. We tackle the legal challenges and systematic barriers that threaten our clients’ economic stability, well-being, and safety. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and constantly improving how we respond to systemic issues of racism that affect our clients in their pursuit of justice. We address emerging and urgent needs with comprehensive, free civil legal services, direct representation, impact litigation, policy advocacy, financial counseling, medical-legal partnerships, and community education and partnerships. Last year, we affected the lives of 90,800 people.

Mission

The New York Legal Assistance Group uses the power of the law to help New Yorkers in need combat social and economic injustice. We address emerging and urgent legal needs with comprehensive, free civil legal services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community education.

Values that guide us

• We reduce the effects of poverty by providing high quality, effective civil legal services.

• We partner with our clients to help them transform their lives and strengthen their communities.

• We address our clients’ multiple legal needs by collaborating across our practice areas.

• We are at the forefront of identifying and understanding New Yorkers’ most pressing legal needs, rapidly adapting to meet these needs with innovative programs and partnerships.

• We assess need broadly, recognizing that need is not a function of income alone.

• We collaborate with community organizations and engage pro bono attorneys and volunteers to serve a greater number of people with unmet civil legal needs.

• We achieve systemic change through class actions, impact litigation and by advocating for just laws and policies.

• We work to create a welcoming and inclusive work environment that reflects the communities we serve.

• We teach and train the next generation of legal service professionals.

Job Description:

The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks to sponsor third-year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law graduates for public interest law fellowships, such as the Skadden and Equal Justice Works Fellowships, starting in the fall of 2021. NYLAG has an excellent track record of successful applicant sponsorship in a variety of areas of civil legal services law.

Although we will consider any project that fulfills NYLAG’s mission, we are particularly interested in fellowship projects that address issues of racial and social justice in the context of the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. As an epicenter of the pandemic, its impact on New York City has been particularly severe. And these negative impacts have been worse for the City’s communities of color, which have been disproportionately impact by COVID-19 itself, and by the fallout from the economic shutdowns. As with prior crises that NYLAG has addressed, we anticipate that the legal interventions required to address the COVID-19 impacts will last for years. These legal interventions will include substantive legal areas such as: consumer and foreclosure prevention; domestic violence; elder law; employment; housing; immigration law; public benefits; shelter advocacy; special education; and veterans’ rights. NYLAG is seeking fellowship projects that address the COVID-19-related issues in one or more of these substantive areas.

Each project should include some combination of direct client services, community education, advocacy, and impact litigation. We strongly encourage those considering applying for fellowship sponsorship to reach out directly to staff in the Unit in which the project would be housed to discuss the viability of any potential project prior to submitting your applications for sponsorship. NYLAG staff will actively work with the selected candidates to more fully develop the fellowship proposal for submission. Please discuss in your cover letter the project that you would like to develop.

We are committed to using employment opportunities to include the voices and ideas of those whose backgrounds and lived experiences are similar to those of our client population as well as those who have been impacted by systemic barriers before, during, and beyond COVID-19.

Applications must be submitted by July 17, 2020. You may use the following email address for any questions: fellowships@nylag.org. We will ask for writing samples and references before interviewing.
