JDC is a non-profit organization that has provided free legal services to low-income San Francisco residents since 1977. Each year, JDC serves nearly 8,500 indigent clients through staff and volunteer attorneys, interpreters, and law students. JDC’s holistic advocacy addresses our clients’ social service needs in addition to their legal needs.

About the Job:

The Sargent Shriver Custody Project (SASH) represents low-income litigants in child custody and visitation cases when the opposing party has counsel. SASH is part of a statewide program following the results of providing counsel in cases involving critical legal issues affecting basic human needs.

All levels of experience are welcome to apply. For newly admitted lawyers and lawyers with no experience, this is a great opportunity to master litigation in access to justice program with real state support.

The Staff Attorney will represent litigants only in the custody/visitation portion of their cases. Responsibilities include: managing cases that are in active litigation; client screening; and limiting representation to the custody issues while understanding the interplay between custody and support and property issues. The attorney is expected to work independently but under the oversight of the SASH Supervising Attorney and JDC Director, and to maintain accurate database records for all cases.
