Reporting to the Vice President of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) at the National Audubon Society, the Audubon Apprenticeships Program Manager will be responsible for overseeing the effective implementation of an innovative organizational program that provides on-the-job training and learning opportunities for young people of color in graduate school or law school, and young professionals. Apprentices will serve in positions that advance Audubon’s mission, coupled with hands on training in organization functions such as science, development, marketing, communications, and finance.
The Program Manager coordinates the strategic placement of apprentices across teams that are key to Audubon’s operating success, cultivates relationships and tracks progress, provides the necessary training for the cohort to collaborate and share learning experiences, and ultimately ensures the Program’s success by helping to place individuals in permanent jobs that evolve their careers in the environment and conservation field.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional who is passionate about ED&I, career development, and building a unique, valued-added program for an organization. Ideally, the Program Manager will be based in Washington, DC, although other locations may be considered.
Under the direction of and reporting to the Vice President of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VP), in the pilot year of Audubon’s Apprenticeships Program, the Program Manager will:
- Coordinate with the Human Resources team to recruit, hire, and orient the new apprentices to the Program.
- Deliver a results-oriented career advancement program for young people of color focused on Audubon’s mission, and key functions such as science, development, marketing, and finance.
- Build a strong community of internal ambassadors, strategic partners, and relationships with a variety of leaders and stakeholders that will support and assist with professional development of the apprentices, and future job placement.
- Monitor and track Program goals, tasks, deliverables, and timelines, and report on status, data, and information.
- Mentor and provide regularly scheduled guidance and supervision to the apprentices, track and evaluate their goals, skills and career development.
- Assist the VP with developing and maintaining external partnerships to support interest in and commitment to the Program, including prospective and existing donors.
- Implement a positive learning experience for the apprentices that informs and engages the staff and Chapters, and fosters collaboration and teamwork on the Program.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years’ experience in program or project management, teaching, education, outreach or related field is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
- Experience developing, supporting and expanding career and/or educational pathways and opportunities for racially and culturally diverse youth or adults is a must.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex information for various audiences, including grassroots groups, decision makers, and the news media.
- Time and project management, relationship building, interpersonal skills, and proficiency in MS Office applications, project management systems, social and other digital media, are necessary.
- Skills using measurement and evaluation methods to determine the Program’s effectiveness, and quantify outcomes, are highly desired.
- Background working in a large decentralized educational and/or nonprofit organizations is preferred, but not required.
- Willingness and ability to travel regionally and nationally as the job requires.
- Genuine interest in conservation, the mission of the National Audubon Society, and social and environmental justice.
