Advocacy Associate

The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) is looking for a mission-driven and team-oriented Advocacy Associate to join our team. The ideal candidate will be excited about working to ensure that the voices of advocates and experts from and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are centered in the global policy conversation.


The Advocacy Associate will provide critical support to the institute’s advocacy and policy programming by collaborating with staff, fellows, and partners to inform advocacy strategy on target countries and themes; cultivating relationships with policymakers in government and international and multilateral institutions; monitoring legislative, policy, and regional developments; conducting research and writing policy memos; and arranging and attending advocacy meetings. This position will work closely with TIMEP’s Deputy Director on executing the institute’s advocacy priorities.


This is a full-time role located in Washington, D.C., where our team follows a hybrid work model that allows for both remote work and in-person work at our co-working space.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Conduct research on and map policy stakeholders at the legislative and executive branch levels in the U.S., Canada, and key European countries; international financial institutions; and other key international and multilateral entities
  • Build and maintain relationships, and conduct outreach with officials at the legislative and executive branch levels primarily in the U.S., as well as in Canada, and key European countries; international financial institutions; and other key international and multilateral entities in collaboration with TIMEP’s Deputy Director
  • Track ongoing policy developments, including statements and actions taken by members of government within U.S., Canada, and key European countries
  • Collaborate with TIMEP staff, fellows, and partners to inform advocacy strategy, priorities, and openings in priority countries and themes
  • Conduct research and draft memos and briefs related to TIMEP’s institution-wide advocacy priorities
  • Arrange for, attend, and participate in advocacy meetings and draft meeting minutes
  • Maintain TIMEP’s internal advocacy reporting sheet and contact database


Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required


  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
  • At least 3 years of related work experience, preferably in a policy or advocacy role 
  • Knowledge of U.S. government and congressional bodies is required
  • Knowledge of policy issues related to the MENA region is required  
  • Knowledge of the political, economic, or social context of at least one of the following MENA countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, and Sudan) is required 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain and cultivate courteous and effective working relationships with partners, stakeholders, and external contacts
  • Ability to adapt to changes in TIMEP and in external environments, manage competing demands, and change approach or method to best fit situations
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage an array of tasks in tandem while following up with colleagues and stakeholders in a timely fashion
  • Commitment to being present at work and on time; to guarantee that work responsibilities are covered when absent; and to arrive at meetings and appointments on time
  • Commitment to working within the Institute’s environment as a member of the larger team to achieve general Institute goals
  • Observes safety and security procedures; determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; reports potentially unsafe conditions; and uses equipment and materials properly


Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Preferred


  • Knowledge of Arabic
  • Knowledge of U.K., European and/or Canadian government bodies
  • Knowledge of international financial institutions 




Candidates must be based in the Washington, D.C. area or be willing to relocate to the Washington, D.C. area. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and available to work within or close to TIMEP’s office hours (9:00 am EST to 5:30 pm EST). 


Salary will be commensurate with experience. The employee will be eligible for all of TIMEP’s benefits which include paid time off; medical, dental, and vision insurance; and a retirement plan.
