Through creative writing, cultural production, and art, Deep creates platforms for the city’s youth and the village of support around them, including their families and adult allies, to share stories, engage in debates, and make Savannah a more just and equitable place.


Deep Center is in a moment of growth, recognition, and great possibility. This role will help drive Deep's efforts to build capacity to do systems-change work, grounded in arts and culture, that can act as a model across the South.


Position

Deep Center is seeking a dynamic, driven Director of Communications and Development (DCD) with exceptional writing skills and proven communications, advocacy, and development expertise to help lead Deep during an exciting time of growth and recognition. Reporting directly to and working closely with the Executive Director, the DCD will 1) design and execute a comprehensive communications plan, with articulated goals and strategies supporting Deep’s advocacy for just and equitable policies for youth and families, programmatic and organizational marketing, and community outreach; and 2) design and execute a comprehensive development plan, aimed at sustaining and increasing funds through institutional grants (foundations, corporations, and government), an annual fund, major donors, and events.


As a member of the management team, the DCD will help to lead an organization that places high value on social justice, equity, innovation, creativity, strategic action, and programmatic excellence. 


Responsibilities

  • Design and implement development plan: Work with the Executive Director and the Board’s Fundraising Committee to identify needs, funding targets, and strategies, and systematically implement the development plan.
  • Design and implement communications and advocacy plan: Working with advocacy team, create plan and ensure timely implementation to support Deep’s mission and goals. Lead Deep’s communication strategy by determining targeted audiences, identifying channels, developing messages, and assessing costs of communication programs. Analyze progress towards goals. Research, co-write, publish, and disseminate policy briefs.
  • Fundraising: Conduct research, prospecting, and application to multiple donor sources.
  • Build a robust donor base: Develop and maintain key long-term relationships with donors and prospects, using various engagement strategies.
  • Leadership Partner: Serve as a strategic partner for the Executive Director and Board of Directors in their roles of advocates and fundraisers.
  • Media: Identify media opportunities that can be leveraged to support Deep Center. Manage all media contacts.
  • Editing: Serve as lead writer and editor of all Deep Center communications, including website, brochures, e-newsletters, op-eds, policy briefs, and press releases.


Management

  • Provide leadership, oversight, and development of the Community Engagement Coordinator.
  • Track and evaluate communications and advocacy efforts and outcomes, and report regularly to the Executive Director and the management team.

  • Participate as member of the management team in ongoing strategic and operational planning.

 

Qualifications

This position requires an individual who understands social, economic, and cultural systems and how historical and contemporary structural injustices adversely affect some communities while benefitting others. The ability to think strategically at the systems level to identify and articulate equitable solutions is a must.


The right candidate will be a self-motivated strategic thinker with a results-driven approach who cares deeply about social justice. S/he will have a proven track record of operational excellence, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to prioritize diverse demanding responsibilities in a fast-paced, creative environment. Experience in arts, youth development, policy and advocacy, civic engagement or community organizing, and/or working in the Deep South highly desirable. Additional qualifications include:


  • Root-cause Analysis: Able and willing to speak about race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and power with experience, courage, respect, kindness, and humility.
  • Development/Fundraising: Proven success in development for a nonprofit, especially in cultivating, strategizing, writing grant proposals for, and securing six-figure multi-year grants from national foundations. Experience running capital campaigns and success fundraising from multiple donor channels (annual fund, major donors, etc.).
  • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development, advocacy, and communication projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to the management team and Executive Director.
  • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current relationships and to forge new ones.
  • Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for marketing, policy advocacy, and fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences.
  • Policy Advocacy: Adept at researching, understanding, and developing convincing messaging about policies that help marginalized youth and their families thrive. Skilled at identifying and cultivating partnerships within mainstream and community-based power structures to successfully advocate for these policies.
  • Technology: Embraces technology to outreach with individual donors and institutions, and to increase operational efficiencies. Skilled user of social media for marketing, experienced with Salesforce, CiviCRM, or similar database/CRM.
  • Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win-win situation, and responds appropriately to key stakeholders. Strategic thinker in regards to networking and cultivation of relationship to support fund development and advocacy efforts.
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with all kinds of people to reach common goals and objectives and to be an active participant in an open and democratic work culture.
  • Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally.
  • Supervisory: Experience supervising staff and independent contractors, and carrying management level responsibilities such as overseeing a departmental budget, training personnel, and maintaining strategic relationships with media partners.
  • Assets-based: Has an assets-based framework for working with low-income populations.
  • Intersectional: Able to cross silos to engage effectively, passionately, authentically and with kindness with activists and community members in diverse ethnic, racial, social, and economic groups.


Benefits

This is a full-time position with a benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental benefits and generous vacation/holiday/sick pay. Salary range: $48,000 - $55,000, contingent upon experience.
