AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation (ATI) has established a reputation for excellence in the education of young children in the District of Columbia. Local and national organizations and agencies as well as many families and community members have taken notice of the positive impact our research-driven program has on children’s outcomes and their later academic achievement.

ATI is looking for a talented and innovative research associate to join its research and impact team. We need someone with extensive experience transforming large amounts of individual- and organization-level data into valuable insights, with a preference for education industry experience working with student, teacher, and school-level data. This team member will be instrumental in defining analytics strategies for AppleTree.  We’re looking for people who want to make a real impact in early childhood education. The Research Associate will work on the Instructional Quality Team and will report to the Director of Research and Impact.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Research Analysis and Interpretation

  • Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate information between programs as needed.
  • Discover meaningful patterns in data, both independently and in collaboration with the research team.
  • Apply technology to quickly process vast amounts of data.
  • Collaborate on research studies and presentations, primarily by providing statistical analyses and results write-ups.
  • Support school-based staff in data reporting and visualization.
  • Support practicum students working on research-based projects.
  • Support the creation of  organized and visualized data to help users easily process the information in a meaningful way.
  • Collaborate with school-based staff to support data management and interpretation as needed.
  • Support the maintenance of data security and data integrity as needed.


  • Work closely with members of the AIQ and AppleTree School’s teams to best utilize available data for decision-making, and anticipate future data-related needs
  • Works with stakeholders to execute business plans based on the data.
  • Be available and willing to help facilitate professional development around data use and interpretation as needed.

  • Effectively use time and resources.


  • Master’s degree in Education/Psychology with a research and analysis focus or a Bachelor’s degree in statistics or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of hands-on experience in data science.
  • Experience with SQL databases preferred.
  • Experience working with API-based data sources.
  • Experience with programs and programming languages used for data analytics (R, STATA, MPlus). Willingness to learn new programming languages, as needed.
  • Technological proficiency in GSuite, Asana, Microsoft Office and willingness to learn new technology platforms as required.
  • Experience working with person-based data (education, psychology).
  • Patience and the ability to communicate clearly to audiences with varying data comfort levels.
  • Highly collaborative work style and team player and a can-do attitude.
