Role and Need

Urban Alliance (UA), a national youth workforce development nonprofit, is currently seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to establish, oversee, and implement organizational fundraising strategies while managing the current, three-person Development Team. The CDO will have the opportunity to join a fun, committed, and hard-working team dedicated to the mission and core values of UA. The CDO will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team which is responsible for setting strategy and making major decisions for the organization.


About Urban Alliance

Urban Alliance provides economically-disadvantaged young people with the exposure, opportunity, support, and training needed to prepare them for lifelong economic self-sufficiency. Urban Alliance’s core program matches underserved high school seniors with paid, professional internships, job skills training, one-on-one mentoring, and ongoing post-program support to expand their ideas of what is possible for their futures. Since its founding in Washington, DC in 1996, Urban Alliance has expanded to Baltimore, Chicago, Northern Virginia, and will open operations in Detroit this fall. To date, Urban Alliance has placed more than 4,000 students in paid internships, and served more than 18,000 youth through job skills training.


Chief Development Officer Responsibilities

·        Fundraising strategy and execution: Establish and oversee a fundraising vision and strategy in partnership with the CEO; Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors across funding streams; Supervise the development of proposals, reports, and fundraising materials; Lead funder site visit strategy; Enhance and/or develop internal processes and procedures


·        Staff management: Set and enforce clear guidelines and expectations; Recruit, interview and hire staff as needed; Train, develop, and manage a high-performing team of fundraising professionals; Support, lead by example, and ensure team cohesion; Ensure development team has the expertise, tools and infrastructure needed for successfully attaining departmental/organizational targets; Provide direct supervision and support to Director of Communications; Nurture a culture of collaboration and communication between the Development and Program Teams across all regions

 

Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s Degree required, Master's Degree in relevant field preferred

·        10+ years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, development and/or other relevant experience (some experience in sales/marketing/business development may substitute for part of this requirement)

·        3-5 years of experience supervising, leading, and developing a team, including performance management

·        Strategic thinker, capable relationship manager, and accomplished fundraiser

·        Excellent oral, written, and public speaking communication skills, including the ability to communicate the vision, goals, and impact of Urban Alliance to diverse audiences

·        Proven success cultivating, stewarding, and closing major gifts at the $250,000 level and above, from foundations, corporations, and individuals

·        Successful track record in building mature philanthropic programs with strong, sustainable pipelines

·        History of management of multi-million-dollar fundraising programs/revenue targets

·        Creativity, adaptability, and dedication to the mission

·        Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines

·        Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Salesforce, Raiser's Edge, or other CRM software
