The 47th Street District Management Association (DMA) is a non-profit economic development organization that manages the 47th Street Business Improvement District (BID) in Midtown Manhattan’s Diamond District. The Diamond District is the center of the diamond and jewelry trade in the United States comprised of a single block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The District contains more than 2,600 diamond and fine jewelry retailers and wholesalers generating $24 billion in sales, and over 90% of imported diamonds go through dealers on this block.
The BID was formed in 1997 by the Diamond District’s merchants and property owners to enhance the commercial vitality of New York’s Diamond District. The goal of the BID is to make the Diamond District safer, cleaner and more beautiful for merchants and consumers who work and shop in the Diamond District. The 47th Street BID’s programs are focused on supplemental sanitation and security services, maintenance of capital improvements and the promotion of the Diamond District’s merchants.
The DMA is governed by an independent board of directors, comprised of district property owners, tenants, elected officials and other area stakeholders. The Board of the DMA is seeking an Executive Director, responsible for the administration, financial management, and day-to-day operations of the BID, and reporting to the DMA's Board of Directors.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Executive Director will be the principal staff member of the organization and will be responsible for the administration, financial management, and day-to-day operations. This includes managing BID programs and services and responding to stakeholders’ issues and concerns, with the goal of improving the business climate and overall conditions within the Diamond District BID. The specific responsibilities of the Executive Director include:
- Oversee district‐wide services including, security, street cleaners, pedestrian safety, and streetscape improvements; comply with organizational policies and procedures;
- Manage the administrative office and supervise staff;
- Oversee all communications including responding to media requests and all BID inquiries, managing website and online presence and ensuring the website serves as a central marketing tool for the BID; production of marketing materials, annual reports, monthly newsletters, and member bulletins;
- Hold seminars and/or workshops on relevant and emerging issues in the diamond and jewelry trade;
- Serve as spokesperson to the media and stakeholder groups;
- Insure compliance with all aspects of the BID's contract with the City of New York including procurement of all goods and services, issuing of requests for proposals, and submission of annual reports and audited financials, among others;
- Maintaining an up-to-date database of all BID merchants, tenants and property owners;
- Working with BID Board members on a variety of issues impacting the district, including marketing, fundraising, special events, business attraction/retention, streetscape/capital improvements and board decisions;
- Maintain organization’s budget and fiduciary responsibilities as detailed in the adopted corporate bylaws and the New York State not-for-profit laws;
- Liaise with business, community, institutional partners, elected officials, and governmental agencies, especially the departments of sanitation, fire, police and transportation; and
- Organize and attend all meetings of the board of directors.
Qualified candidate will have demonstrated the following skills:
- Candidate must be able to successfully pass a extensive background check;
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in some combination of the following areas: government, public policy, politics, real estate, economic development, business assistance, retail management, non-profit, or urban planning;
- A Bachelor's degree is required, and a Masters degree in a related field is preferred;
- Outgoing and friendly personality with excellent verbal / written communications skills and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office with emphasis on Excel. Familiarity with Quickbooks;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize projects to meet required deadlines;
- Financial management experience including budgets;
- Entrepreneurial and creative, with a strong team spirit;
- Public relations, social media and marketing experience;
- Experience applying for grants, fundraising, and resource development;
- Preferred experience with non-profit management, BIDs, and/or a board of directors; and
- Knowledge of the diamond and jewelry industry a big plus.
