Job Description

 

Brooklyn Defender Services is seeking a full time Paralegal to provide assistance for a variety of paralegal functions within the Criminal Defense Practice. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude and strong organization skills.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities:


Knowledge of the court system and some understanding of criminal law


Prepare legal documents, including orders to produce and subpoenas


Extensive communication with city and state departments of corrections officials, court personnel and attorneys


 


Secondary Duties/Responsibilities:


 


Assist with the preparation and court filings of legal documents/pleadings


Communicate with court personnel to obtain signed subpoenas and court documents, including transcripts


Access case databases


Serve subpoenas


Perform various office functions as needed: organize, scan, copy and or fax legal documents.


Serve and/or file legal documents/pleadings


Obtain copies of court files/certificate of dispositions


 

Training and Qualifications


Excellent organizational, communication and record-keeping skills


Ability to work independently and in a team setting


Ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines


Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel


Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required


Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, Paralegal certificate from an ABA accredited paralegal program, or prior experience as a paralegal in a criminal law setting


 

Requirements:


Applicant must become a Licensed NYS Process Server and NYC Commissioner of Deeds/NYS Notary Public
