Job Summary

The Director of Prospect Research brings the ability to independently conceptualize, manage, and complete long-term and short-term research projects. The Director of Prospect Research will manage a portion of fundraising portfolios and their research, and will participate in tactical and strategic discussions to engage those prospects. This position oversees a team of Senior Research Analysts who conduct research, oversee major and annual portfolios, and coordinate multiple projects for gift officers across the development office, as well complete a daily patient screening.

The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with an in-depth grasp of data analysis; this includes not only the acumen to create insightful profiles and reports but also the ability to clearly and efficiently present complex information to multiple audiences to support Mount Sinai Health System’s $1.5B campaign.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct the daily operations of the Prospect Research team: Organize gift officer special requests and negotiate with them to provide research on a timely basis, and coordinate deadlines with Associate Director of Prospect Research; Meet regularly with Research staff to manage daily needs and meet biweekly with Senior Director of Prospect Research to stay abreast of executive requests and projects.


  • Manage a team of two to three Senior Research Analysts; Convene and lead brief meetings as needed to distribute daily workload and delegate responsibilities amongst team members; Oversee quality of research and establish annual goals for Senior Research Analysts; Conduct and deliver annual performance evaluations for each reporting staff member.


  • Oversee and manage a portion of major gift portfolios and their pipeline development, especially those portfolios related to fundraising for the system hospitals; In partnership with the Director of Pipeline Development, implement strategies for these portfolios, develop their pipelines, and coordinate moves management.


  • Manage multiple suspect pools and their systems to maintain a strong pipeline of major gift suspects, including coding and data management; Oversee the entire pipeline of suspects and review it regularly for potential trustees, prospects, and grateful patient development; In partnership with the Director of Pipeline and Prospect Management, propose suspects with major gift capacity for prospect assignment; Provide auxiliary support to the daily patient screening process, including suspect review and research.

  • With the Associate Director of Prospect Research, lead and direct Research team in shaping and completing team-based research projects, including meetings for Committee on Trustees, international efforts, and annual events; Ensure that the coding used is user-friendly and coordinates with other codes and reports in the database.

  • In concert with the Associate Director of Prospect Research, develop training modules for new Research staff and Development staff (from MGOs to Development Assistants), and oversee training workshops on Research systems and protocol.


  • Participate in establishing policies and procedures to create an effective environment for research to move through the moves management system. This includes HIPAA compliancy and coding issues, with a special focus on those issues that affect the Research team.


  • Conduct both proactive and responsive research, using wealth screening tools to complete research profiles and prospect identification projects, including both domestic and international profiles

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Education


Bachelor’s degree, Advanced degree preferred

Minimum Related Experience


Minimum of seven years’ experience in development research, including intensive experience with development research tools, resources and techniques. Some experience in managing staff, or demonstrated team leadership within a development research operation, is also required.

 

Preference will be given to candidates who have worked in academic medical setting and /or complex nonprofit fundraising environment and have experience with capital campaigns


Minimum Computer Skills


Experience with Raiser’s Edge is especially helpful.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

General Skills


  • Strong understanding of information management in a database structure, particularly the ability to store, retrieve, and analyze data. 
  • Strong analytical skills to perform complex analyses on a wide range of biographical, financial, public, and Mount Sinai (internal) information.
  • Ability to synthesize information into concise, well-written documents that help to inform strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, to meet deadlines, and to monitor multiple projects.
  • High degree of professionalism, ethical sensitivity, and discretion; the Director of Prospect Research position requires astute judgment and an absolute commitment to confidentiality.
