Director, Accounting & Finance for a 30+ employee (and growing) remote education non-profit providing professional learning to K-12 educators nationally

SUMMARY OF POSITION

 The Director, Accounting & Finance collaborates with the CFO to lead financial strategic planning, manage financial operations, assess financial performance, and evaluate possible risks to maintain the organization’s overall financial health. As a rapidly growing nonprofit, we seek an experienced accounting and financial professional who is excited about leading our organization towards profitability and long-term impact. Eligible candidates must demonstrate sound financial planning experience and hold broad knowledge of nonprofit accounting, financial, and business principles. Ideal candidates will also possess strong analytical skills, exceptional strategic thinking capabilities, have an eye for designing efficient processes and systems, are driven and proactive, have stellar communication skills, and can manage up as needed to execute on strategies. Above all, any candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to racial and educational equity. This position has high potential for both large-scale impact and career growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director, Accounting & Finance will engage in the following:

  1. Collaborating with the CEO and Executive Team (including financial consultants and CFO) to engage in financial strategic planning, create Teaching Lab’s financial strategic plan; implement financial strategic plan
  2. Analyzing and reporting on financial performance in Teaching Lab’s CRM, Oracle Netsuite 
  3. Leading bottom-up budgeting process and finalizing Teaching Lab’s annual budget with the Executive Team and Board of Directors
  4. Conducting financial forecasting to advise Executive Team on staffing and other resource allocation decisions
  5. Preparing monthly financial updates and annual comprehensive budgets at the organizational and departmental-level for internal and external audiences (e.g., Executive Team, Board of Directors, funders, and auditors)
  6. Leading Board of Director finance committee and support them in reviewing Teaching Lab financials and in making high-stakes financial decisions 
  7. Analyzing and reconciling accounts receivable and accounts billable; managing staff to follow up on outstanding accounts
  8. Leading annual financial auditing process with an external auditing firm
  9. Partnering with Executive Team to determine our business development strategies, including identifying opportunities and risks
  10. Recommending, obtaining, and implementing budgeting software 
  11. Stewarding the integration of finance, human resources, and operational processes and strategies

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Work Experience, and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or in a similar field, like Business Management
  • 5+ years of proven experience in financial management and/or business development
  • Broad knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP), laws, and best practices for nonprofit organizations
  • Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting
  • Proficiency with Oracle Netsuite CRM, or similar system
  • Background in education is not necessary, but must be curious about topics in PK-12 education and committed to advancing educational equity
  • Experience in an entrepreneurial role or startup organization (preferred)

  • Collaborative and highly flexible approach, having the ability and desire to both lead and support other staff members’ efforts
  • Strong attention to detail; organized and systematic and capable of balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
