Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a Media Associate to assist with its media work to elevate the voices of its members and advance its policy goals. The Media Associate will be part of a fast-paced Communications Team and report directly to the Media Specialist.

This position is ideal for an ambitious go-getter with deep commitment to social justice, interest or experience in media work, and strong persuasive writing and communication skills. A good candidate would be able to thrive both in team settings and in independent work, be highly self-motivated and able to multitask, organize, plan, prioritize, and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.

MRNY is a large, multi-faceted organization, and this position requires flexibility, a positive attitude, impeccable time management skills, rigorous attention to detail, a sense of humor and the ability to handle many tasks and manage competing priorities. This position will be based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with periodic travel to meetings and events in Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Media Specialist to conduct press outreach and pitch reporters on upcoming events, especially for MRNY events.
  • Write media advisories, press releases, and statements in English and Spanish with organizers.
  • Draft opinion pieces (op-eds) and other pieces in English and Spanish.
  • Translate English materials into Spanish and translate Spanish materials into English.
  • Help research, manage and build targeted press lists, and keep up-to-date press coverage database.
  • Attend and provide support at organizational events.
  • Regularly serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
  • Help train organizers and members to conduct MRNY interviews, and support them during those.
  • Provide periodic social media support.
  • Provide periodic work to support MRNY’s sister organization, Make the Road Action.

Experience and Qualifications: 

Required:

  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Commitment to social justice and be able to clearly articulate the mission and political context for MRNY’s work.
  • Knowledge of federal immigration policy, health care, affordable housing, police reform, and/or worker’s rights.
  • Fully bilingual English/Spanish, including the ability to write and copy edit public materials.
  • Writing, editing, communications and presentation skills.
  • A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a Communications department: writing press releases, planning press events, developing media strategies and pitching stories.

Compensation: 

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days and paid maternity / paternity leave.
