The Job

More Than Words (MTW) seeks an inspiring leader who combines a strong background in business operations, experience working directly with high-risk youth and a proven track record of motivating teams to meet and exceed goals. As a senior member of the MTW leadership team, the Site Director will lead the Boston site through a dynamic phase of exciting growth as we expand to create a 2 floor hub of social enterprise to empower our community’s most vulnerable youth to radically transform their lives.   


The Site Director is responsible for cultivating an empowering culture that ensures successful outcomes for youth, fidelity to the MTW model, and alignment between the organization’s strategic agenda, operations and outcomes. Specifically, the Site Director provides strategic leadership, as well as day-to-day oversight around: all youth and social enterprise programming, quality assurance and accountability for measurable outcomes; staff development and management; and, cultivation of external relations, partnerships and collaborations.


This Site Director reports dually to the Chief of Social Enterprise and the Chief Program Officer,  serving as the “buck stops” generalist who directly supervises the Youth Development, Social Enterprise, and Graduate/Career Services departments, totaling ~17 adult staff, and numerous volunteers who will serve ~300 youth each year in the core social enterprise and graduate programs. The Site Director provides support and direction to the business operations and youth development teams and serves as a role model and professional resource for youth. As MTW’s enterprise operates 7 days per week, including evenings, this position offers a flexible 5 day per week schedule.


Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:


Staff Development and Management

  • Provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence, cultivate an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment, and foster a strong culture of pride among both adults, volunteers, interns and youth that upholds the core, integrated principles of More Than Words.
  •  Develop a high performing team that is accountable for hitting outcomes and key performance indicators
  •  Recruit, hire, train, manage and evaluate all site-specific staff.
  •  Directly supervise the Director of Youth Development, the Associate Director of Career Services and the Director and Associate Director of Online Operations (~4 people).
  •  Provide ongoing coaching to staff to identify and implement professional growth and development strategies to maximize talent retention and strengthen MTW’s leadership pipeline.
  • Provide technical assistance, troubleshooting, back-up and hands-on support around business and youth development program operations as needed.


Program Design, Implementation, Quality Assurance and Accountability

  •  Ensure consistent alignment among all components of the MTW model, including integrating the business enterprise model with the youth services programs and defined outcome expectations.
  •  Monitor and lead continuous improvement strategies for all staff Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure MTW is effectively moving youth through the model and on to measurable, positive outcomes.
  • Ensure fanatical focus on data usage and improvement around youth recruitment, persistence, re-engagement after dropping out, and graduation outcomes in education, employment and productivity.
  • Provide direction and standards for addressing and managing youth needs and support staff to handle youth issues, including case management, disciplinary matters and crises as needed.
  • Foster a youth-led culture and serve as a professional role model and resource for youth.
  • Provide leadership in developing and refining youth-led trainings and resources.
  •  In collaboration with the Director of Learning and Evaluation, effectively collect, report and utilize data around program and youth performance for the purpose of refining service delivery, informing management decisions and strengthening youth outcomes.

Operations Management and Enterprise Sustainability

  • Support Social Enterprise Directors and staff to ensure efficient operations systems to hit all financial goals while equipping youth with critical competencies.  
  • Develop, manage and monitor site budget and make recommendations to senior management around site budgets and resource needs.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Administration, ensure that the appropriate administrative systems, policies and processes (including but not limited to scheduling, human resources, payroll, inventory, billing and transactions) are in place and comply with internal standards and external regulations and requirements.
  • In partnership with the Director of Administration and Leadership team, ensure that necessary infrastructure (including facilities, technology, transportation) and related supports are in place to promote cost-effective operations and customer-responsive services.

External Relations, Partnerships and Collaborations

  •  In collaboration with the Director of Community Engagement, represent MTW in the community with partners and local businesses as needed to build awareness of MTW’s enterprise and programs.
  • Lead the identification and development of partnerships that enhance MTW’s capacity to meet its enterprise and program goals.
  •  Support efforts to create an engaged community of volunteers, donors and brand ambassadors. 
  •  Take a leadership role in supporting development efforts with corporations, foundations, and individuals including meetings, tours, presentations, appreciation efforts and events.



Candidates should possess the following qualifications:

An ideal candidate will enjoy being in a position of significant responsibility and will have the experience and background necessary for providing leadership, decision-making and inspiration to teams of adults and youth in an intense work environment.  A good-fit candidate will be sharp, a quick learner, able to multi-task and be comfortable with the need to make difficult decisions in “real-time” with a laser-like focus on accountability. The candidate should be a highly organized project manager with strong planning and follow through skills, an outstanding communicator and enjoy working with youth in a collaborative setting. The candidate should also be responsible, flexible, hard working, ethical, trustworthy, sincere and willing to hold youth accountable for their choices.


Additionally, a strong-fit candidate will also have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Previous experience working with adolescents, preferably in an education or job-training setting.
  • At least 8 years of work experience with a minimum of 3 years providing direct supervision and a clear record of demonstrated experience leading teams in an outcome-oriented environment.
  • Background and/or education in BOTH business and youth development and a working knowledge of state systems (DCF, DYS).
  •  A passion for sharing knowledge and skills with youth and empowering THEM to run the business.
  • A talent for multi-tasking and an aptitude for thinking on numerous levels simultaneously (supporting individual youth, developing and empowering youth training model and managing a legitimate business).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends to support staff and events and be on call as needed.
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes of books weighing over 25 pounds, move up and down stairs and be physically active on a regular basis.
  •  A valid driver’s license and be able to transport books and youth safely.
