Sauti Yetu is a multi-issue community based organization that works with African immigrant women and families both in New York City metropolitan area and nationally. Our services are evidence-based, focused on sustainability, and designed to leverage each woman and family’s strength and resilience to develop solutions to problems that create barriers to their political and economic self-sufficiency and personal well-being.

JOB SUMMARY

Our main office in the South Bronx is seeking a dedicated Supervising Staff Attorney for our Legal Department. Supervising attorney will oversee the legal services program and supervise a legal team. This individual will have an opportunity to work in a diverse collaborative environment, providing direct services as she or he works closely with social services providers and community partners. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day management of the legal services program, supervising attorney will represent clients and maintain a caseload of immigration and family law matters. The ideal candidate for this position must be a licensed attorney with a proven track record of delivering exceptional legal services and supervision in a community based organization. The supervising attorney must be an organized strategic thinker and adept litigator with excellent written, verbal, time management and interpersonal skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Supervise legal services team consisting of BIA accredited representatives, Immigrant Justice Corps fellows and support staff.

·        Monitor substantive legal work including reviewing light-touch and complex immigration matters, case reviews, feedback on written material and verbal advocacy.

·        Provide mentoring, consult and advice.

·        Represent clients by maintaining a caseload of immigration and family law including but not limited to VAWA self-petitions, Battered Spouse Waivers, U/T Non-immigrant Visas, Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Orders of Protection, Custody & Visitation, Child Support and Divorces.

·        Collaborate with community partners to host legal clinics, Know Your Rights presentations and community outreach events. These partners include but are not limited to schools, mosques, churches, ethnic associations, parent associations, community and legal services.

·        Represent Sauti Yetu on committees and working groups to address social and legal needs of African immigrant communities.

·        Apply for funding opportunities and support fundraising efforts for the organization.

·        Manage outcome goals for federal, state, city and private grants.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

·        Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school

·        Admission to New York Bar

·        A minimum 5 years of experience as an attorney in the field of immigration, family and matrimonial law

·        A minimum 3 years of experience as a supervising attorney

·        Strategic thinker and skillful litigator experienced in New York Family and Supreme Courts, and Immigration Court

·        Excellent written, verbal, analytical, time management and interpersonal skills

·        Ability to relate well to diverse groups of individuals and families

·        Must work well in team and partnership environment

·        Demonstrated commitment to representing a client population that is Limited English Proficiency and that has been traditionally disenfranchised, particularly African immigrant communities.

·        Commitment to community based model of providing social and legal services

·        Experience working in a fast-paced and multidisciplinary setting with social workers, lawyers, and case managers

·        Proficiency in French or other African languages (preferred)

·        Other duties as assigned
