Job Summary

YouthBuild Philadelphia offers several skilled labor workforce development training options for students. Under the leadership of the Building Trades Instructor, students learn substantial rehabilitation of a residential property including demolition and cleanout, blueprint reading, cost estimating, framing, floor preparation and finishing, installation and drywall installation, and interior finishing.  

Responsibilities and Duties

In addition to the school wide expectations for all YouthBuild employees, the core responsibilities of the building trades instructor focus on the following categories: Skill Development, Student Support, and Construction Operations.  

Skill Development 

  • Provides direct instruction to students enrolled in the Building Trades Workforce Development programming throughout the academic year.
  • Teach carpentry and construction fundamentals that includes but not limited to safety, deconstruction/demolition, rough framing, drywall, painting, finish carpentry, etc.
  • Teach the proper use and safe handling of all hand tools, power tools, materials handling and equipment to students 
  • Teach fundamental skills and knowledge to increase students’ likelihood of passing and receiving NCCER and OSHA credentials 
  • Incorporate lessons learned from professional development and coaching around literacy strategies into unit plans. 
  • Support students with reflecting on community service as a significant component of the workforce development experience, thereby strengthening students’ critical consciousness.
  • Meet weekly with students to assess and address their skill development in professional skills and report on this to the Director, Workforce Development. 

Student Support

  • Ensure that worksites are designed in a way that models restorative practices including elements like circling up at the start and end of each day
  • Develop and maintain attendance tracking and accountability systems which will include leadership development of student managers
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and respect for various social identities
  • Oversee monitoring of students’ time and grades on the construction site 
  • Adhere to all student behavior plans and IEP plans
  • Collaborate with Specialized Services, Student Life, and Student Success Management to ensure that students are receiving high levels of support from Youthbuild staff during their workforce rotation.
  • Collaborate with the Career Partnerships & Postsecondary Initiatives Department to help inform the need for specific internship opportunities for current students and pipeline for employment and continued education/training upon graduation

Construction Operations

  • Provide oversight for one or more construction sites, ensuring safety at all times, making sure students are demonstrating correct technique of tools 
  • Conduct and document safety meetings and inspections 
  • Interface with subcontractors and inspectors on-site 
  • Complete job site reports, including monthly progress reports, accident and incident reports, tool check lists, students attendance and grades, change orders, and back charge documentation
  • Serve as the point of contact for the construction work plan for the assigned site.
  • Maintain responsibility for material needs of job site, as well as all tools and equipment for job site 
  • Develop and keep production timelines and individual project deadlines 
  • Pre-plan for projects including providing, in a timely manner, scope of work, MOU, external contacts, expenses, and plans for student involvement (including travel if necessary)

YouthBuild requires the following qualifications for this position:

  • At least three years of professional construction experience (carpentry preferred) working with all elements of housing construction including but not limited to carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and knowledge of building codes required. 
  • Experience managing people, especially work crews in construction setting 
  • Experience working in a team setting 
  • Ability to adapt and flex in a quick paced environment

Priority consideration will be extended to candidates that can demonstrate experience in the construction or building trades and also in the teaching and/or workforce development sectors with young adults.  

Physical Requirements

For teaching and demonstration purposes only, all candidates should be able to:

  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Use of hand and power towels on a regular basis
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Reaching, stretching and extending arms in the course of duties
  • Engage in repetitive movements such as hammering nails
  • Kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl

  • FBI - Criminal History Report
  • PATCH - Pennsylvania Police Department - Criminal Background Check (and/or applicable based on State of residency)
  • PA Child Abuse History Clearance
  • TB Test Results
  • Act 24 - Arrest Conviction Form
  • NSOPW - National Sex Offender Clearance
