Hypothermia Prevention Program Facilitator

FACETS opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County. We meet their emergency shelter, food and medical needs, help them gain safe, sustainable and permanent housing and work with them to end the cycle of homelessness and poverty through educational, life skills and career counseling programs.

Get paid to make a difference this winter! FACETS is currently hiring for part-time temporary/seasonal positions available with its Hypothermia Prevention Program, providing a safe and warm overnight shelter during the winter months to men and women who are experiencing homelessness. The emergency program operates seven days a week from November 25, 2018 to March 31, 2019 (Please Note that due to inclement weather the last day might be extended) and is located at various faith communities throughout central and northern Fairfax County (Fairfax, City of Fairfax, Reston, Burke, Annandale, Centreville, and other locations to be determined). Faith communities rotate hosting the program each week and staff must be willing to work at all locations. In addition, there are four mandatory staff training days: October 20th, October 27th, November 3rd, and November 17th.

Minimum Qualifications: 


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two years of experience working with mental health, substance abuse, and/or homeless population required.
  • Bi-lingual a plus.
  • Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be willing and able to drive to hypothermia locations in inclement weather, including snow and ice. Calling out for shifts due to weather is not permitted and will result in termination.
  • Must be able to commit to at least three shifts per week and arrive promptly for your shift.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries. 
  • Organized, reliable, motivated, and able to engage challenging guests.
  • Candidate must be able to lift items weighing 10-20 pounds.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified (training available through FACETS on October 20th, 2018 – advanced sign-up required)
  • Right Response Certified (training available through FACETS on October 27th and November 3rd, 2018)

Major Responsibilities Include:


  1. Represent FACETS in the community, in accordance with Agency Mission, Vision, Values, and Code of Ethics.
  2. Act as the point person for the on-site operations of the shelter for the duration of shift
  3. Assist with maintaining a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and guests at all Hypothermia venues
  4. Strong problem-solving skills in dealing with guest disputes as well as medical and behavioral challenges.
  5. Support Hypothermia program operations.
  6. Guide faith community volunteers.
  7. Work with onsite FACETS, County, and police staff.
  8. Ensure accurate record keeping.
  9. Maintain attitude of respect for the faith community venue.
  10. Assist with facilitating life skills groups (budgeting, housing, mental health, substance abuse/use, employment, education, and other topics as defined).
  11. Assist with basic case management services such as the enrollment in benefits, job searches, and completing housing applications.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.
